This is helpful as I want to use the OE door and have been wondering which way is best. Anyone have any experience with the Smittybilt oversized tire carrier. Seems like a good unit and the price is nice at only $129.99

yes, i had it. 35" spare that rattled.

i used it all of 1 day and returned it.

it rattled and didn't fix anything.

it seemed like a nice product, however the JK tailgate just can't hold that.

the TF one is $$, but it's WORTH IT.

Following but question, several of you have mentioend you are using the stock tire holder but just the TF hinges.

That cuts down on the cost some but is it meant to do that or just luck it works out that way?>

I am running 32.7 inch tires on a 17" wheel. i have only 1200 miles on my new 2014 and I already have the rattle.

I am running the TF Hinge with the stock carrier and 35s. (actually 34.5).

NOT a single rattle, squeak, noise. nothing. LOVE IT.

the OEM carrier isn't the problem. I wouldn't hang a 37 or 44 from it, but it holds my 35 just fine. If it ever gives I'll get the Terra Flex one.

the OEM problem is the tailgate can't hold up to the weight of the tire. the carrier is fine... at least mine is... I haven't really used it off road yet; but plan to this fall.

Running the TF hinge and stock carrier as well, and have a 37" tire hanging off it. I've got a RC 1.25" body lift on, without the bumper raise brackets, so that gives the extra room needed. At some point I'll be adding the TF carrier, but it's fine like this for now.

Thank you, I just got back from opening weekend out in West Texas and did some trails and crawled a creek bed, noticed I got a popping noise when I hit bumps, I can move the tire and make the noise, so I pulled it off and tightened everything up and it is better but not right. I only have 1200 miles on my 14 JKU

Default rust

that's not cool. I will have to look at mine tonight; however my jeep rarely gets wet lol. I leave the top down 24/7 and drive it when it's sunny out...

some WD-40 lithium may help hold the rust at bay...

Is the hinge rusting or is it the pin and it's staining the hinge?
