Default Third brake light

I'd like to move that goofy looking third brake light down so that it shines through the spare tire rim holes. I've seen the various threads with different ideas on how to get this done. In my opinion, simply lowering the stock unit by removing a big section of the mount appears to look like a good option, at first glance.

I checked the Wisconsin lighting statutes on this and one paragraph in particular sounds like it could cause trouble (see highlighted text and pictures below). If part of the original lamp is covered by the wheel.... and it is....

Any thoughts on this?

Trans 305.15 Stop lamps. (1) Every automobile origi-
nally manufactured commencing with the 1950 models, every
light truck or motor home originally manufactured commencing
with the 1955 models, and every homemade or reconstructed
vehicle registered on or after January 1, 1975, shall be equipped
with at least 2 stop lamps. All other motor vehicles shall be
equipped with at least one stop lamp.
(2) The stop lamps of every vehicle shall be maintained in
proper working condition and in conformity with this section and
s. 347.14, Stats.
(3) All wiring and connections shall be maintained in good
condition.
(4) All stop lamp lenses shall be installed and maintained in
proper condition and may not be covered or obscured by any
object or material.
(5) (a) The high−mounted stop lamp of every motor vehicle
originally manufactured with a high−mounted stop lamp shall be
maintained in proper working condition and may not be covered
or obscured by any object or material.
This paragraph does not
apply to the temporary covering or obscuring of a high mounted
stop lamp by property carried on or in the motor vehicle or in a
trailer towed by the motor vehicle.

Here's stock:

Here's kind of what it would look like:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I gues I just needed to hear someone else agree with it...

Bullhead City, huh?

I spent two days there last year when I rode my bike on Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. Nice place, but kinda hot! Took a couple of trips over the river to give some money to the casinos too.....

I'll bet you've got some great Jeepin trails in that area, huh? All we have here in Wisconsin is muddy logging trails and one 4x4 park two hours to the north.

Thanks for the input!

Why not move the third brake light up to the roof ? You could use one off a Van or their are a few aftermarket co. makeing bolt on's.

I moved mying down into the wheel, like you were thinking of doing. But iam in NJ...

I saw a picture somewhere of the third brake light raised above the spare. The owner cut it off and made brackets for it and bolted them to the tire mount, then bolted the metal brake light bracket to the "homemade" brackets. It lifted the light up about 3". Might be able to go to HomeDepot and "create" some brackets to lift it up.

There are also kits...

I only have the hard top on if there's snow around, so that won't work. I want to move it down, like yours, less conspicuous.

I definitely don't want to move it up higher, either on the roof, or with some brackets...

I'll have to look at making a bracket that goes through the center hole of the spare.

I bought the AEV light. I'm happy with it, and its small enough that it might fit with your wheels.

I don't see how 5a could be misconstrued as illegal behind the tire (still visible) if the myriad of cars that have their CHMSL mounted behind the back glass are still legal.

You might get away with it, but I can definitely see where some cops might get you for it. It is still visible, but is definitely partially obstructed.

Looks like #4 would render the MOPAR tail light guards illegal. That's just ridiculous.
