Default tire comparison

i'm looking to get a set of 35's for the jeep and have been shopping around, but i was wondering what peoples personal experiences were with certain tires.

heres the 1's i was looking at in order by price

nankang mudstar
maxxis bighorn
kumho Road venture mt kl71
cooper stt
nitto trail grappler
nitto mud grappler

i'm mainly goin to be doing mud/trail riding for offroad, but i drive this to work, so the tires have to last more than 20k miles

any help would be appreciated

thanks,
Donnie

I bought the Hankooks and saved about $300 over the similar BFG's. They seem to work well offroad, have worn very well (I have about 20,000 miles on them and there is more than 50% left) but are a bit shorter than comparable BFG's.

i run firestone discovery M/Ts. These are not a leading mud tire but i love them so far. They were very reasonably priced, do great off road, self-clean very well in mud, are quiet on the road and wear very well. Plan on buying another pair when these are finished.

Did you mean Firestone Destination M/Ts? I ran those on my last Jeep. These things are absolutely a bulletproof tire on the rocks and very smooth and round on the road, none of that back and forth wobbling crap. The 35" are about $240 a piece. Really a nice tire, and surprisingly underused by the Jeep community.

The Firestone Destination M/Ts are the #1 consumer rated M/T on Tirerack. Good long life, VERY round and the smoothest M/T I've ever had on the highway. They have some noise like the rest, but they are M/Ts after all. Great on scrabble rock, mud, road and not bad in deep snow and slick rock. If you do Moab or slickrock often, I would sipe them. I ran them for 20000 miles and were still half tread.

If you want a mud tire get a mud tire dont mess around with these tires that are nothing more than an agressive all terrain tire. I have 35x12.50 17 nitto mud grapplers. I was wheeling just last weekend and my jeep was making it up some fairly easy basic muddy hills in two wheel drive and my buddies had to use 4 wheel drive to get up the same hills. The BFG tires that came on my 08 rubicon stock were just garbage in the mud.

Good
Rock on mud and rock
Ballance well
flex just fine on my 4 door when aired down

Bad
expensive
noisy

If you are going to use them on your DD and you decide to go with the Nitto's, I would go with the Trail Grappler and stay away from the Mud Grappler. They are very loud.

Picked up some 315/75/16 Maxxis Bighorns.

I couldn't justify the prices on the BFG/Nitto/Goodyear mud tires, (around $270 each), so started looking at others. The Firestones seemed a decent choice, good reviews, but no siping ($220-ish). Then I found the Maxxis Bighorns. Siped, great reviews, and only $179 each!

Very impressed with them so far. Not the best on ice, which I expected, but run great on highway/dirt/mud/snow/rain. Can't comment on tread-life yet, but from the reviews, they should be above average...

The only real complaint I have with them is that they are a bit shorter than I'd like. Mine measure right at 33.5" @ 30psi and normal load.
