Angry Tires! Help!

I am beyond frustrated. I understand what all of the numbers and markings mean but I just cannot match a tire and a rim. I have the stock wheels and tires on my 2012 JK, which is a 225/75R16. I either don't know how it works well enough or there are no larger tires to fit on the wheels. If somebody could help me, I am looking to put new rims and new 31" or 32" tires on my jeep, and like I said I cannot match 2 and 2. Any input, directions, advice, or whatever you have to offer would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Default tires and wheels

Just go to almost any tire web site, Discount Tire Direct, Tire Rack, ebay, etc. and put in your vehicle make, model, and year. they'll give you more options than you can look at. But if you ever want to go with bigger tires while keeping your wheels, it's best to stay with a smaller diameter wheel. Hard to find really big tires to fit on big (diameter) wheels.

Your last number 16 is the number that any new tire will also have. That is your rim size (hole of tire). That size will take a few larger sizes of the front 2 numbers (235/85, 245/75 etc) Any tire store could match you up.

Also if u are going with new rims then that size could change as well. I used tread depot.com when I ordered my new tires. Very good price and their site gives you the actual tire diameter (ie 31" or 32" as u previously stated) instead of the 255/75/16 or whatnot. Fyi , you can probably fit 33s without a lift and for sure 32s since they come on some models stock.

Default No need to be frustrated

if you only want to go to 31 or 32 inch tires, I recommend buying someone's takeoffs stock Jeep wheels and tires. You can have all 5 with the Goodyear SRA 32 inch which is a 255-75-17 for about $600 or the BFGoodrich (from a Rubicon) for about $1100. Either one is a great upgrade, you get all 5 wheels and tires ready to go and no worries about fitment, warranty or speedo calibration.
A great place to look for them is on Craigslist under autoparts and search for JK. Don't be afraid to look at different cities and neighboring states if you are willing to pick them up.
Many Jeepers sell the stock wheels and tires as soon as they purchase their Jeep so many could be pretty new.

If you want to buy used, I've got some 33/10/17 KM2s and Moab wheels.

Default thanks, but still confused

Thanks for all of the input, but I am still a bit confused on one point. So lets say I were to get some black rock wheels. The size is a 17x8, 4" backspacing. I get what all of that means, so now I need a tire to match to it. How do I go about that? 8" is about 203mm, does that mean i need a tire that is a 202/______? Or if the tire is measured in inches, I would want a 32x___? What is that second number?

8 is the width of the wheel (rim) you don't need to worry about this for a 31" or 33" tire. If you want a 33" tire look at 285/75/17 and if you want a 31" tire look at 265/75/17 - when you start going larger tire sizes sometimes the width of the rim is important for you not so much.

Default im sorry but still...

So what you are saying is that if I got the 17x8 wheels, the width of the tire (i.e. 225) doesn't need to match the 8" of the wheel? And then only the 17" of the wheel would have to match the 17" inside of the tire?

yes the 8" is just the with of the rim. some rims are wider like a 17 X 10" rim. but for the size of tires you want you a 8" rim will suffice perfectly. most tires mount on between a 7" and 10" rim easily. the wheels you want plus a 285 75 17 tire should mount and fill your tire well fine. the tire will come out to being about 33 x 11.50. x 17 in English.
