I followed the project-Jk write up on alignment after the lift and tires in my sig. To check my work the first time and make sure I was doing it correctly, I took it to NTB for a free alignment check and print out. He brought me a print out and for the toe it had .20 for the front left, -.10 for the front right for a total of .10. He asked what I was looking for and I said 1/16 to 1/8 toe in. He told me I was toe out, and they would fix it to 1/8 toe in for $25. I told him go for it. He brought back a new print out showing -.1 FR, -.1 FL total of -.2. While he was doing it I did some research and apparently negative is toe out. I hounded him about it for 15-20 min and he ASSURED me that negative was toe in on their machine. He told me to go get it tested at another shop and if it was toe out he would give me a free oil change.

Is this correct? Could negative be toe in? I am going to measure myself when I get home but apparently I can't do it right.

 

When the toe angle numbers are positive, it represents the front of the tires being pointed inboard.

Here are all the numbers for the JK:

CASTER + 4.2° ± 0.5°
MAX LT/RT DIFFERENCE 0.65°


CAMBER − 0.25° (fixed angle) ± 0.37° (-0.62° to +0.12°)
MAX LT/RT DIFFERENCE ± 0.5°


TOTAL TOE-IN + 0.20° (0.10° each front wheel) ±0.03°
MAX LT/RT DIFFERENCE 0.04°

 

That is what I thought. So when I go back to have him fix it, what do I want it at to be 1/8 toe in? +.10 for front right and left for a total of +.20?

 

It's not that simple when you are talking degrees and fractional inches.
You need to do the math for the size tires you have.
There are times when you need more or less toe to compensate for any front end mods you have.

 

Ok, I have attached my report. What would you (or anyone else who wants to chime in) do if this was your report. As in, based on this what should I tell them to do to fix it (it being the toe)?

 

Your ok at .10 total toe. At .25 total toe you'd be at a 1/4in. Where your at is just under 1/8in total toe , machine can vary a tad.

 

I might add, total toe in is what you want number wise, there is no way for them to adjust left and right seperate.

 

Just follow the alignment instructions on the main Project JK page. I've done 4 lifts in the past 6 months. I check the toe using a 2x4 across the center of each wheel to give a measuring point. (With the help of assistants) and a tape measure. I measure and adjust till the front side of the tire is only about 1/8 in. shorter then the back side for the slight toe in. When having them checked the toe was right where it should be.

 

Sure there is.... by combining tie rod and drag link adjustments.

 

I was at .1 total, now I am at -.20 ( negative .20). Meaning I am toe out. So do I need to go to .2 total toe or .1 total toe? I think you are saying I need .1 total so 0.05 for left and 0.05 for right correct?
