Default TPMS question.

I'm getting new tires put on this week and Discount tire told me I'd have to change my TPMS. I thought this was only needed if I was changing my wheels also. Am I missing something?!? Do I have to ask them not to touch the TPMS?

New tires don't = new sensors. No reason they can't reuse your old sensors unless there's an existing issue or they're broken. That said, there are batteries in them that do wear out. Usual life is 4-5 years apparently.

If you do run into an issue with the tpms sensor you can buy the AEV pro-cal module which allows you to disable the tpms sensors and it's cheaper than 4 sensors plus it has a ton of other features

I have some experience with TPMS and wheels. I would say - no - just adding new tires does not mean new sensors unless the old ones are not working.
My examples -
Tires and wheels from a Jeep TJ put onto a Jeep Liberty - no issue with sensors that were in the TJ wheels - took about 20 miles to get re-set.
Tires and wheels from Jeep Liberty switched onto Dodge Nitro - took about 20 miles to reset and all was fine.
Tires replaced on a new Jeep Patriot, swapped on snow and ice tires, no change in sensors and all was fine when put back on.
So - switching from vehicle year and model seems to work , I would believe it was based on being the same vehicle family - dodge , jeep.
Just some input from my experiences.
Stay safe -

Even if you have the need for "new" ones they shouldve offered you the rebuild service, its about half price so around 70. My discount tire told me new sensors were 34 a piece

My friend thinks I asked the wrong question. So let me see if I can rephrase it and go from there.

I'm going from KM2's to Trail Grapplers, on the same existing rim. Why would any work need to be done to the TPMS (replace or repair) increasing the price of my purchase from Discount Tire?

If you aren't changing rim you should need anything to do with tpms. Unless they damage it taking the tire off.
