I just cut a peice of 3/8's plywood that fits over the holes and uses hinges to attach to the tie downs. When you put the seats up it just hinges up, when down it covers the holes. I have a 4" peice of dense foam that I use as a mattress.

Been there, done that... slept many a cold night on the trail too... some with my wife.

It does get a little cramped, but snuggly.

Thanks for the photos xerofall... I'm a little more convinced that I can actually sleep back there if I need to. Looks like yours is set up like "Home Sweet Home", very nice! Do your rear seats have headrests that fold backwards when the seats are down? When I was laying in the back of mine today testing the potential (after reading this thread) I found those headrests to be my nemisis preventing me from laying out flat and as hard as they are they certainly aren't a comfortable pillow.

I use a Coleman HD airmattress. It fits perfectly. I am 6'4" so I have to lay somewhat at an angle but, it's a heckofalot easier than a RV and more comfy than a tent.

If you slide the front seats up all the way and tilt them forward so they're almost straight up, the rear head rests will fold underneith and won't be sticking up and out. Sliding the front seats all the way forward also gives you more room to stretch out.

I got a clothes rack/bar from the local auto parts store to use as a curtain rod for a little bit more privacy...

Then used a spare CB antenna stretched across both sport bars to hold a small tent fan with light...

We slept comfortably the first time we tried it... we even had the back window open to let the breeze in... however I got a nasty mosquito bite on my ball sack, I'm not kidding... so it was then that I came up with this...

A screened in back window...

Edit: I'd love the option of sleeping in the back of the Unlimited but it would be pretty tight. I'm also curious as to peoples solutions for that cavernous hole behind the seats when they are down. Do you taller people sleep with the tailgate open?
I am 5'10" and thought I could sleep in the back of my Unlimited, but truth be told, I enjoy my tent much more, or a bivy. It's warmer, and if I am camping, I probably have "stuff" in the back that I don't want to unload. It's easier to just throw an air mattress on the ground and a bivy sac. I don't have a lift yet but am looking forward to that, then I can sleep UNDER my Jeep if I have to. I might feel safer that way. Sleep is a luxury.

At 6'1" I need to sleep nearly fetal in the back. I've only done it a couple of times and each time was with my wife as well. Also, I was for some reason dizzy and wobbly-legged when I had to sleep back there. Too dizzy and wobbly-legged to care much about comfort. I'd assume a small air matress or thick foam would be all right if you were making it a habit. I did well enough with a sleeping bag and pillow. My wife complained, but she's the princess not me. I've slept on a row of logs with a jacket for a pillow. When you're tired enough you can sleep just about anywhere, I guess.

While a bed would be ideal, I plan to install mounts for one of these hammocks in the back of my two-door. I first saw them at the local co-op sporting goods store, and it immediately peaked my curiosity.

Provided that the front passenger seat is oriented correctly, it should be relatively easy to use it diagonally across the vehicle. Of course that only works if you don't weigh too much. The cage definitely couldn't support more than one body without reinforcement.
