Whatever winch you get make sure you have the gear to go with it. Tree saver, D-rings, snatch block, gloves. And read up on safe winching techniques.

Iam using a recon 10,500 and I used it yesterday awesome winch and has never failed me. It came with synthetic line and and a recovery kit all you need to winch your self out of a spot and it's waterproof to an amount and wireless remote that works great . And was only $475 . All the below $500 winches whether W, Q, E, or S are made in the same Chinese factory. That said, I still got the Quadratec Q9500i because I know Quadratec will stand behind it. I did have a dead motor after the first rewind and they rushed me out a replacement, no questions and no BS.

Most winches will work under water for a little while. 12Volts is not enough to cause a short but once mud gets under the brushes the circuit is broken.

If you want a truly water-proof winch (to 1 meter for 30 minutes) be sure it has an independent lab rating of IP67.
