Most 12.5" wide tires have specs that say 8 or 8.5 wide wheels are the bare minimum.
The 9 would put you more in the middle range of what the tire was designed to fit on.

It might not be relevant and its not really an answer to your question but the larger you go the more they will stick out of your fenders and you have the sahara, so all the road or off-road debris will be trown on your fenders and the paint will chip fast...

just my 2 cents, if it is important to you

So, if you can get either with 4" or less backspacing, then, if you do rocks, you'd prefer the 8" because there would be slightly more protection of the wheel when aired down.

If you don't do rocks, the 9" will allow a flatter treadwear on the street & better handling.
I went with tires spec my 35x12.50x17 BFG Km2's suggested 8-10 inches wheel, i went with 9 as it was in the middle, but that was just my choice!

Might as well go bigger to start and give yourself some room. I got 33x13.5's and didn't hesitate to get 10" ones.

I have 17x9 soft 8s with 5 inch b.s. and 35x12.5x17 km2s and no rubbing issues even aired down to 14psi (properly centered rear axle with adjustable trak-bar)

Now I am just confused 4.75 will be ok with 35's but not 37's. What is the ideal bs for 37's. I will really probably only ever run 35's. 4.75bs is ok for 35's right.
