And chrome doesn't rust, I'm almost positive, Chrome is ugly as hell but is resitant to about anything you throw at it, but it is weak or expensive on its own so it is applied as a coat of paint, or a finish. You prob got a nick in the chrome on your truck and the metal under the chrome rusted out and pushed the chrome off and kept rusting...... just my .02
