Why Do I keep busting gears?
Ok So I am on my 2'nd set of 5.13's.... from a reputable US brand...
I poped the second set about 4 weeks ago, same as the front one's. This is what I need to know.. what the hell is this installer doing to my jeep.. they are accredited installers, and "know" what they are doing, but every time it goes bust, they blame it on the gears!!!..
The first set I got about 40kms on, the second set about 4500 kms.. neither times were any wheeling done, and both times at slow speed, about 60mph...
What happens is: during a slight uphill, when the the auto box gears back, The gear will start making a massive noise, as if you are pushing a piece of frozen meat through a meat saw!. Then a humm on acsell, and the strange wrrrrrrr sound when you reach a cruising speed and the throttle % reaches your speed.... hope this helps to explain...

5.13's, 4 years, zero problems.
My money is on the install. Assuming they were installed correctly with the appropriate preload:
Then I'd say your carrier may be deffective. After that option you are in to wierd options like:
Deformed (out of round) center section.
Poorly machined pinion surface.
That's about all I can come up with.
Sorry I don't know more.

Well even if the carrier is warped, or the housing is warped, then the installers damaged them, as the stock 3.73 did 30k+ kms and no issues!...
Thanks again for replying!.
QUOTE=carolinajk;2980074]the wear pattern on the paint marks looks inconsistant like may be you have incorrectly installed pinion looks like it may be flexing also ask them did they even check backlash[/QUOTE]
(X2) The pattern is real tough to make out, but it does appear that the coast side is near the outer edge and the drive side is near the inner edge of the ring gear. Not sure if that is pinion depth or backlash adjustment.

Couple of things are wrong here. First, the pinion depth is wrong just looking at the wear pattern. Second, the last time i saw an inconsistent pattern, the pinion nut was not torqued down correctly. I recently rebuilt my front pinion and the crush sleeve was an absolute pain to crush. I had to use a 6 foot 3/4 inch breaker bar. Also, strength wise, a 5.13 pinion on a dana 30 is not a strong combo. This wont be your last rebuild on that axle.
