snorkels are also a big help in desert or dusty areas as well.... not just water....

If your doing it for water crossing's you should also extend breather lines and reroute some of the wiring or water proof the wire connectors. IMO they are a huge help in dusty conditions

Snorkel is like a condom, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Easy and cheap way to water proof your connectors is to get some dielectric grease and coat all your connectors. Not the contacts themselves but inner part of the plastic area where they clip together. You could also rubber tape them too if you're really concerned.

I ended up during tidal flooding driving in water halfway up the headlights for about a mile and managed it without a snorkel and no water inside!....I kept a small wake in front at a steady speed and prayed a whole lot (not to mention butt pucker!) and because it was brine as soon as I got myself out I went to a self service car wash and sprayed the hell out of everything in the engine and undercarriage....that was 2010 and still no problems (yet).

snorkels are like lockers, overrated and under utilized. they can both be avoided with the proper line.

How can you avoid dust and dirty air on a narrow trail with trees on the side?

not sure what trees have to do with it...
use an air filter for dust block get a washable one that you can clean after each off road adventure, even better

this might be the case for greens and dirt roads but i have been in water crossings on some blues that have been rutted and washed out to a point that i wouldnt have tried it without a snorkel or lockers but i guess without them i could have been a spectator or had someone pull me when i got stuck
