Default Will 2 wheels of the same backspacing but of differing widths stick out the same?

Hello All,

I've searched and searched, but couldn't find an answer...so here it goes. I'm trying to determine if 2 wheels of identical backspacing with identical tires but differing wheel widths will protrude the same amount or differing amounts from under the fenders.

For instance:

Wheel #1: 4.5 BS, 9.0 Wheel Width, 12.5" wide tire.

Wheel #2: 4.5 BS, 8.5 Wheel Width, 12.5" wide tire.

Will one come out from under the fender more than the other....or will they be the same due to identical backspacing?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

The wider wheel will stick out a half inch more. If you lay your wheel face down and lay a straight edge across the rim, the backspacing is the distance from the back side of the bolt flange to the back edge of the rim (the straight edge). 4.5" is therefore the distance on the back side of any wheel with that backspacing. The remainder of the wheel width is what will stick outward from the vehicle.

Thanks! Makes sense that the wheel itself will come out an extra half an inch......Does that mean the tire tread surface will as well or will the tire tread stick out the same amount and just have the side wall of the tire stick out a half inch more? Does that make sense? In other words I'm trying to figure out how much more tread surface, if any, will be out from under the fender.

Thanks...and I apologize for my ignorance.

The tread pattern itself will not noticeably stick out farther, but the sidewall (at its widest point) will stick out a little further with the wider rim.

To MudBather's point, I seriously doubt you would be able to tell the difference between the two just looking at them. So subtle that I'd go with whichever wheel you want more.

Agreed. The difference would probably be less than a 1/4 inch.
