That is true - but the saftey side is in my view a myth. Yes you can get wire splinters (not from synthetic) but this is an indicator that your cable should be replaced, yes the synthetic can fray too (less noticable) and both can be cut, but getting cut in half by a snapping cable NO, find an example if you can.
Major injuries can occur if a cable brakes, but generally from the falling load. Both synthetic and wire are a risk here if not well maintained.
Synthetic is nicer and easier to handle - major advantages - but I'm not sure its any safer.
