Out here the synthetic would get covered in cactus thorns when dragging across the ground. Big concern if you are handling the cable/rope.

thats a good point rub61. i got my whole wifes family out in az, visit there often so i will probably want to hit some trails there. ASU '11!

You should be wearing gloves when winching, so cactus thorns on synthetic line or burs from frayed steel cable shouldn't be an issue. Synthetic won't cut you in half or go through your Jeep if the line breaks, but a cable can.
