Hello everyone, I need some guidance. I'm about to replace the rear axle of my 2009 JKU 145K milles. About 3 weeks ago I replaced the gear oil in my rear differential. But when the oil started coming out, also did it metal chunks, specific gear teeth. I did not wanted to open the pumpkin and see the damage. I know shimming and replacing the gears, are a level that way is over my head, so I went online and got a used 2015 JKU 45K milles rear axle. I"ve been looking online for a video on how to replace the rear axle, but so far I don't have any luck finding one.
My question is, is any of you has seen of know the link or done one yourselves on how to replace a complete rear axle?
Any help or comment or guidance, will be really appreciated.
I will star taking it of, tomorrow Friday March 6, I'm located in FT Eustis just in case any of you is near by and would like to give me a hand.
Thanks. Metal chunks that came out from the differential. Replacement.
This is a straight forward task. Removing the driveshaft from the pinion flange will probalby be the most fun part. other than that, disconnect your ABS lines, breather tube, unbolt everything and slide it out of the way. Since the pumpkin is in the center on the rear, if's farly easy to balance it on a floor jack to move it. Slide the new one in. Making that first connection is usually the trickiest part. Once you get 2 connections made it goes pretty smoothly. Having 2 floor jacks helps sometimes. Put all bolts in loosely, then torgue em down when the jeep is under it's own weight. Since you have arms on that new axle, I would suggest removing the upper arm and keeping your current one. The bolt at the frame-side on the upper is a bitch cuz you have to hold a flag nut up in the frame rail that the bolt screws in to.
If you do your own work, print that out and keep it on hand. I have them printed and laminated and they stay in the jeep with me all the time. Useful to have on hand.
Fellas, thank you so much for all your comments and advises, I was able to take it out and install the new one. New spring coils and new shocks. Took out the cover and clean it up, put new seal, and tomorrow the only thing that I have to do is put the new gear oil and bleed the brakes. It was a learning experience. I will post pictures of the new axle, also as a the cherry on top, came with a monster track bar, so I’m very happy.
Resharp001, thanks for that info, I will print it up..
Resharp001, that is amazing information. Yesterday before I went to sleep I opened the link and the information, things that I never taken out are there. I will the same, print them out and put them in a doc protectors, have tons of that at work.
