We love playing in the snow out here in Idaho. Just don't do it with M\T Baja Claws they are scary in the snow! The tread pattern provides no grip for side to side resistance.

This happened in slow motion.....The tires don't stop side to side travel...

Never!!!

Considering Spokane had almost 93 inches during the 2007-2008 and 98 inches for the 2008-2009 winter, we are tired of snow! Normal snowfall is around 44 inches.

However, I heard a report last night on the weather segment of the local news that Mt. Rainier (elevation ~ 14,000ft), which is just SE of Seattle, got their first snowfall of the season! So the season may not be all that far away

I've heard more than one report that said the northern hemisphere may be in for some very snowy winters over the next 5 to 10 years, so all you snow lovers may be enjoying a lot for a while

Default let it snow

In the last decade (almost 1.5 decades), portland hasn't gotten much snow with the exception of last year. Personally I welcome it (bring it on!). And as for tires, standard mud tires work alright when there's enough snow to shovel around, but once the snow gets compacted or there just isn't that much, your traction goes out the window. (also remember all the fancy drivetrains in the world will help you get traction, but won't help you stop)

For this last season I ran the Cooper M+S, it's the tire technology used to make the studless tires (like blizzak), but studable to boot. Towards the end of the snow when it turned into 8-10 inches of slush (worse than the snow), I put my chains on and found my traction about the same as the tires. In the snow I could plow through 12-15 inches of snow w/out incline in 2wd, and if needed had 4wd for the rest

so in short, those tires kicked some serious butt.

*reminder, these coopers and other dedicated winter use really soft tread compounds, I highly advise against using them outside of winter, you'll just wear them out really quick

Thumbs up

Since this subject made it back on top, I thought I would share a little pick from the 08' snow too..
It's not my Jeep.. but it is my Dodge Cummins buried slightly..
It took me awhile to get the Jeeps out of the garage..
And even longer to get to the main road..
