My political $0.02... At some point the focus will need to turn to reinvesting in our nation. So much of our infrastructure is in sad shape--it's stuff everybody needs, but that nobody wants to pay for. It's going to be a tough sell and an even tougher debate.

As long as this administration's focus are vote-oriented "social programs" don't count on it. Of course, there will be several pushes to raise or create more taxes that may not necessarily fund the infrastructure upgrades.

The state is too busy putting round abouts on every street and they have no funding left to fix the roads and bridges that are falling apart! IMO

I don't quite understand why, in this thread, this is turning into the state of Washington's fault. I understand the bridge was deemed unsatisfactory along with a ton of other bridges, but that is not the reason the bridge fell. (As far as I know, although the fact it was unsatisfactory doesn't help)

I'm no engineer but I think an oversized load hitting a support on a lot of bridges would bring them down, unsatisfactory or not.

Did news come out that the driver didn't actually hit the bridge, and that's why we are blaming the state, or do we just like blaming the government and not the person who is actually at fault?

Actually there was a big investigation done by king 5 news that showed many of the bridges that have been hit by oversized loads and 99% of them do NOT collapse. This bridge was in need of serious reinforcments and renovations. The only thing the goverment is being blamed for is misuse of tax payers money! The truck just threw the bridge into rebuild mode quicker than the goverment was ready for.... Now watch them scramble to figure out how they are going to pay for this... Budget cuts again??? Hmmmm

In the end of the day the responsibility must be shared between the driver, the pilot car his company hired, who should have known better, and the State. So, this one is water under the bridge (no pun intended).

Anyway... Thankfully no one was seriously injured so, hopefully, the experience will make both big cargo drivers and government learn with the mistakes and take corrective actions immediately before lives are lost in another of those freak accidents. I do not hold my breath for the government, tough.

Agree with ya on that one. But our favorite roads are the non paved ones anyway. Pavements a waste of money. .

Glad everyone in this accident was safe. Again, happy Memorial Day weekend.

this is exactly on my weekly Costco trip route. I live about 8 miles south of the bridge and cross it 4 or 5 times a week. I went up yesterday to take a look first hand, and the traffic is being routed through college way... its going to suck up here for awhile. Luckily I can take Hwy 9 to Walker,
