Had to see if anyone in Washington has or is running a front stubby with a stinger. If you are or if you have did you have a run with the legal side of it. I've searched and can't find any one specific law on it in the RCWs. I have two front bumpers I'm trying to decide from I would really like to go with the stinger but certainly don't want to get pulled over for it two days after I put it on. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with what cop what county and what mood you happen to wander into so I'm just looking for a little input on the subject

Technically all offroad bumpers are illegal in all states because they do not comply with the low speed impact regulations. The stinger is not the issue but rather the lack of plastic... But I have never heard anyone being ticketed for it.

It can't be a very strict one because the dealership in town is putting them on new jeeps still,on the lot. Also my brother had one one his 2006 unlimited and was never bothered. The most I have heard is might be a measurement from the ground to the bottom of the bumper. I have several law enforcement officers that are customers I will ask around , but I think it's more their decision

Run it! Johnny law does not give a rip about your bumper....he'll bust balls over no mud flaps, but you could have baby parts dangling from your stinger and he wouldn't notice.

A little extreme there Alex. But I agree with most of it. Stubby bumper all day long. The tire coverage needs to reach the centerline of the axle. Quite a few of us have been hit with that one.

Hope this helps:

Bumpers: A motor vehicle must be equipped with a bumper on both the front and rear of the vehicle with the exception of motor vehicles where the original or predominant body configuration, provided by a recognized manufacturer, did not include such bumper or bumpers in the design of the vehicle. For the relevant model year, bumpers must accommodate recognized manufacturer impact absorption systems pursuant to applicable SAE Bumper Standards or equivalent standards.

Bumpers are optional equipment on vehicles defined as street rod vehicles, custom vehicles and kit vehicles.

Bumpers, unless specifically exempted above, must:

(a) Be at least four and one-half inches in vertical height.

(b) Be centered on the vehicle's centerline.

(c) Extend no less than the width of the respective wheel track distances.

(d) Be attached to the vehicle in a manner equivalent to the original manufacturer's installation.

(e) Be horizontal load bearing and attach to the vehicle frame to effectively transfer energy when impacted.

(f) Be mounted at a maximum height based on the original gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle, measured from a level surface to the highest point on the bottom of the bumper. For vehicles exempted from the bumper requirement for the reasons stated above, a maximum frame elevation measurement must be made to the bottom of the frame rail. Maximum heights are as follows:

The only thing I could find in the RCWs was the bumper is supposed to go all the way aross the front from the outside of each tire but I've already chopped my stock bumper and haven't been messed with the stinger would would be like hanging a red flag on it so that had me a little worried but maybe I just won't let it effect my decision much but thanks for the input guys

This one cracks me up... The stock bumper wouldn't do this. So how can they be sticklers about taking it off and replacing it with a stronger one?

I work for the state so trust me when I say there was no thinking involved when they wrote the RCWs
