Rubicon
I'm road tripping to NorCal the last week in May. Taking the Reno route up, and coming back down through the Bay Area. I could throw a tent in the back and add an extra day to my trip.
You will be close. Its west of Lake Tahoe. Between Loon lake and Lake Tahoe. I have a map but cannot attach it. Maybe someone else can help out. May might be a little to soon for us but I will keep posted.

If you do the whole trail plan for 3 days.... carnage add more.
There are day trips with areas to exit the trail. I can help with those.
Wait for Jeepers Jamborie before or after and the trail will be all "groomed". They start the groom late July.
April, May are the best months. Right after the snow melts and the nights are still cool and crisp. We have seen snow, hail, rain freezing night temps in those months. Water crossings are high.
June, July are fine warmer. Trail has been used and everything is in place after the snow and rains. Water crossings are low.

Basically the trail runs from either wentworth springs or loon lake. Both starts are accessed from Ice house rd (off hwy 50 in cali). trail runs through a basin and puts you out at Tahoma on the west shore of Tahoe.
The trail can be run either direction but there is a ton of snow up there right now and will be there for a while. Years that have had this much snow usually will have a very wet trail with mud holes that'll sink a 35" tire.
I'm betting there will still be snow in May as the Sierra's are still getting snow.
I've run it in June and had it snow on me. My opinion is October for the best weather, and before the Jamboree if you want to get a chance to experience what the trail really has to offer. Otherwise the trail is usually back to it's old self by the end of summer.
