Default Dipping rims...

Picked up a gallon of plastidip to spray on my grill. I'm also considering doing my procomp rims.

For those that have done this... Did you remove the tires before spraying? Tape them off? What prep steps did you take before spraying your rims?

Thanks in advance for any input on this subject.

Pull them off, plan on 6+ light coats. 3 to 4 cans of the spray will be enough. I cleaned them with wheel cleaner at the power washer, drove home then wiped them down with denatured alcohol. Laid all 5 out in the driveway on cardboard, taped them off and sprayed them. I think it took me about 4 hours to do the work. I had them mounted and rolling the same day. Be sure NOT to spray the surface that the shoulders of the lug nuts will hit when mounted. It will cause the plasti dip to pull off the area around the lug when you tighten them up. I am really happy with the result, it has held up much better than I expected, going on 18 months with minimal touch up.

For plasti dip I leave the tires on and don't mask them off. The over spray just peels off when your done. When I use regular paint I just mask off tire.

That was a great write up! I have a spray rig, so don't have to be bothered with the rattle cans.

I found it helps to lay quarters over the lug nut holes and the plastidip 'cuts' itself along the line very well. Also using index cards around the rim helped avoid overspray. As mentioned, clean well then wipe clear with alcohol as prep.

(Note that I did four coats of 'dark grey' and two coats of glossifier in these pics)

After re reading my first post, when I said "mounted " I had just meant putting the wheels and tires back on the jeep. Not putting the tires back on the wheel.

I have also tried not masking the tire and peeling off the overspray as mentioned above, I have had mixed results... Stock jeep tires were a pain to get it off of. My buddy has a xterra and the plasti dip came right off his tire.

Nice. I like the idea of this and from what I have seen it has gotten some good reviews and some great looks. So here goes the next project on my list.

I love the way this stuff works. I did this to mine about 4 months ago, and 2 weeks ago we did my brothers Chevy 2500 HD. I have read a few people say they had a run and peeled it off, starting over, what we found is this stuff self levels pretty well, if you do find yourself with a run, let it dry usually the next coat will coverr it up completely.

Same here. The couple of runs I saw flattened out nicely. I pulled the wheels and popped out the center caps. If you get any in the lugnut holes you do need to get that out. I used paint thinner and q-tips. I've been off-road several times since applying in July without any issues. My grille needs to be touched up but I kinda expected that.
