Default Can an experienced JK'er please school a newbie?

I have been searching and didn't find too much on this.
As one who is looking to buy a new Jeep, please school me.

Question 1: Stick or auto trans? Like mentioned before, I have no issues with either on the roads, but what happens when you are sitting sideways going over a rock? Does the clutch thing get in the way, or lose footing and stall?

Question 2: Does anyone have any info on 2012's Unlimiteds? Im waiting to see the dif from 2011's, but have not found any info. I bought a '98 Mustang brand new, and was disapointed when the body style changed with '99 because I liked that one more. Just don't want to do that again.

Thanks all!

wel.. with a stick.. youre going to have "better gearing" so to speak. its easy to get up and go in a manual because you control the shifting. the manual will be cheaper... although.. like mentioned above.. when climbing rocks or in traffic.. having an auto is way easier. I dont care how long you have been driving stick.. you will stall sometimes climbing rocks. the autos now have hill assist which is pretty cool when descending off large rocks.. however.. we all know.. girls love a guy who knows how to drive stick!

If you dont mind waiting the 2012 will have a new engine. Likely 70 more hp. There is a thread on here about the 2012 with many more specifics.

Agree also from what I've seen with auto tran there is a heating problem. I have manual and very happy with it I used to stall in begning but not anymore you just master it after few rock climbings.

Any auto will overheat if you dont drive it right. choose the right range for the terrain and you dont have to worry. An auto wil go anywhere a stik will and more! especially in the snow and ice. IMO I would say if you are able to choose, go with what you like cause it just dont matter that much.

As far as stick or auto???? I think it's going to come down to what you like more, they both do great offroadI'm sure you'll be happy with what ever year you get also because you can't go wrong they are jeeps! This will be one of the first, of the many choices your going to make about your new jeep. And belive me there will be alot......lift,tires,bumpers,winches, etc.etc. Good luck man

They both have their pros and cons. I've heard that people have had to replace their clutch with a stick. So. like others have said, it's just personal preference.
X2 mine hasn't either

Default reply to all...

Thanks everyone.

I drove 18 wheelers cross country for 3 years, so shifting isn't a problem. My rig had a 13 speed trans so the 5 or 6 speed won't be a problem. (Although I have not experienced operating a clutch laying on my hip.)

If the 2012's are similar to 2011's, I will most likely save money buying a new '11 when 12's are already out?

Again, thanks all. Just something that boggled my head. Just had to ask.

being new to the off road world i would start off with a auto, i can drive a auto and stick but when im on the verge of flipping i want full control. also depending on what mods and how hardcore you are going to go i would think about a used jeep from a private party. maybe one that is already built up, you would save a ton money!
