Can an experienced JK'er please school a newbie?
Yeah, torque converters can be changed like in hotrods, but haven't looked into aftermarket tranny parts for a JK. Good info thanks.
from driving a stick from a manual i have found benefits and drawbacks. as mentioned in the rocks and stop and go traffic you will suffer a bit. you are able to save more petrol as you can drive a gear to high and shift low. it seems to be a little eeasier to lift a manual. going up to bigger tires you are less likely to need to regear. when going down steep decents i think a manual is better if you dont have a hill decent controle. climbing long hills i think is better in a manual as it can shift down for you, you dont have to pick the right gear and ride it out. when driving through mud and water the clutch is vented so you have to make sure you choose the right gear vs manual were you can just drive.
i think at the end of the the day there are wins and loses to both. it comes down to what you feel most comfortable with, a manual is definitely a more envolved driving expirience. sorry if i repeated anything i did not read through the whole thread

i have a stick and have stalled on rocks, but one good thing is when in 4 low you can start in gear and not step on the clutch. my personal preference is a stick, and i wouldn't change to a auto just for off roading.
its all your preference, there are pros and cons for each

Never know when you fall asleep with a dome light on...
Stick provides better control, and if you have a rubicon you're almost never going to stall in 4 lo. Better gas mileage, more drivable with bigger tires, and less problems with driveshaft hitting sump pan or whatever on the auto when you lift it. I get 22 mpg on the highway, and I have 325/75/17 tires
