I've been a law enforcement officer for 22 years. It's anyone's guess, but it's my opinion these guys would probably have been critically injured or killed even with seat belts. The amount of energy in the bouncing, possible closed head trauma, potential for spinal injury (lateral and vertical loading) and even injuries such as aortal tears are very high in an accident of this nature.

Having said that, I've never seen use of a seat belt contribute to or result in a motorist's death, so wearing them will only protect you in virtually all circumstances.

Sad story. -RIP-
just because a vehicle ended up 200 ft. from where it started doesn't necessarily mean that it was rolling end on end the entire time. in fact, there was a thread here not too long ago where a gal completely rolled her TJ on a steep hill once, landed back on all 4 tires and then continued to travel all the way down to the bottom where she crashed into a ravene. from top to bottom, i'd say it was much farther than 200 ft. as i recall, she wasn't wearing a seat belt either and ended up getting hurt badly but luckly, her hard top managed to keep her inside and she managed to survive.

now, i'm not saying that this is what happend to these guys as i wasn't there to witness the roll but, the more times you roll, the more damage a vehicle will sustain and looking at the pics, the jeep in quesiton really doesn't look all that bad. certainly, i have personally seen worse. and, even if it did go rolling all that way, i still think the occupants would have had a better chance of surviving if they were restrained inside. as you stated, wearing your seatbelts will only protect you in virtually all circumstances and i'll take my chances with them.

Makes me want to get a five point harness I always wear my belt when wheeling. It guess it all boils down to the price you pay for the chance you took My thoughts and prayers to their loved ones.

Wow that's really sad, and sort of surprising to me because my initial thought was it was some young kids but instead it was an older couple. This should be an eye opener...wear that seat belt it really could save your life.

Wow that is really sad. I used to never wear my seatbelt either because it restricted my movement and it always locked up while i was wheelin. i was young and dumb then to. i always wear a seatbelt now, no matter how uncomfortable i am.

Just to play devils advocate, I had a friend who was driving with two others in the car. they were all drinking, bad to start. He wasn't wearing a seat belt and the other two were. long story short they crashed he was ejected from the car and lived. everyone else did not make it. However, this happened on the street. I guess i am just saying that anything can happen but at the same time statistics show that seat belts save lives.

Wow - this is really sad. Terrible news...
For me it is habit to buckle up anytime I sit in my Jeep. This only reinforces that I'm doing the right thing...

I knew a guy that rolled his jeep without a seatbelt and got killed. I also know a guy that rolled a jeep with his arm outside and got it cut off. The point behind saying this is that you cant be too safe. Im not saying dont have fun. I just know theres a smart and a stupid way to go about everything.

I've never understood why people go wheeling without a seatbelt. I've seen TONS of pictures on JKF that shows people without doors, half way hanging out, with no seatbelt. It's plain ignorance.

That is a sad moment,.....but,...shit happens,.....God bless their souls

Thats really sad. I wish they would of been wearing seat belts.. I put mine on every time i wheel its just not worth it to not have one on. I may be young and reckless but, i still think about safety 100% of the time.
