Main Divide Road Trail Forest Road 3S04
Description: Difficulty: 3/10; Scenic: 9/10; 26.11 mi.; 3.5 hr.
Location: Start: CA74 Ortega Hwy at Riverside County mile marker 5.5, 21 mi E of San Juan Capistrano; End: Knabe Rd, 0.5 mi S of I15 exit at El Cerrito.
Things to see: Ridge top trail, easy day trip from LA and San Diego,access to hiking, biking and horseback trails, highest point in Orange County (Santiago Peak 5,687 ft).
Rincon Shortcut
Description: Difficulty: 2/10; Scenic: 10/10; 25.2 mi.; 3 hrs.; permit required! Best kept secret trail!
Location: Start: Sam Gabriel Canyon Rd (CA39), 0.2 mi N of San Gabriel OHV staging area; End: CA2, 0.6 mi N of intersection of Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd.
Things to see: Long, lightly used trail, Angeles National Forest, narrow shelf road, views over Angeles NF and LA city.
Upper Lyttle Creek Trail
Description: Difficulty: 2/10; Scenic: 8/10; 16.43 mi.; 1.5 hr.
Location: Start: CA2 in Wrightwood; End: Lytle Creek Rd, 1.5 mi N of the settlement of Scotland.
Things to see: Long trail on ridge top, connects two small towns, views over Lone Pine Canyon and Lytle Creek.
Beartrap Canyon Trail
Description: Difficulty: 2/10; Scenic: 8/10; 9.05 mi.; 1 hr.
Location: Start: 5.6 mi W of intersection with Angeles Forest Highway on Santa Clara Divide Rd; End: 2.6 mi S of intersection with Soledad Cyn Rd at Aliso Canyon Rd.
Things to see: Alternative connection with Santa Clara Divide Rd, popular with hunters and bird watchers.
Pinyon Ridge Trail
Description: Difficulty: 2/10; Scenic: 9/10; 10.8 mi.; 1.5 hr.
Location: Start: Big Rock Creek Rd at Camp Fenner; End: Big Pines Highway, 0.1 mi W of Mountain Oak Campground.
Things to see: Canyon along Big Rock Creek, open Pinyon Ridge top trail, access to hiking, birding and hunting.
Cleghorn Ridge Trail 2N47.
Description: Difficulty: 2/10 or 4-8/10; Scenic: 8/10; 13.31 mi.; 1.5 hr.
Location: Start: CA138, 1 mi S of intersection with CA173 at Silverwood Lake; End: I15 at Cajon pass.
Things to see: Choice of two levels of trails- easy or hard-difficult, ridge top trails, views over Mount Baldy, Silverwood Lake.
Skyline Drive (Big Bear)
Description: Difficulty: 2/10; Scenic: 9/10; 8.8 mi.; 1.5 hr.
Starts at the end of Aspen Drive in Big Bear City, near Bear Mountain. This trail is also known as 2N10. It heads east towards Castle Rock, Champion Lodgepole Pine and then down Mill Creek towards Big Bear Lake. Trails that veer off of it are 2N17, 2N86, 2N11, 1N54, 2N51Y and 2N06.
This trail closes in the winter.
Call area ranger station to see status of trail, and it's still not a good idea to go alone with these easy trails.
