Default 08 Manual

TIRE CHAINS
Install chains on rear tires only. Tire chains may be
installed on all models except the Sahara and Rubicon.
Follow these recommendations to guard against damage
and excessive tire and chain wear:
Use chains on P225/75R16 tires only. P245/75R16,
P255/75R17, P255/70R18, and LT255/75R17 tires do
not provide adequate clearance.
Use SAE class “S” tire chains or traction devices only.
Chains must be the proper size for the vehicle, as
recommended by the chain manufacturer.
Follow tire chain manufacturer’s instructions for
mounting chains.

Yea I didnt use the chains till the last day when the 38 was under R3 so I had to put them on to not get a ticket. I could have easily not used it. I have a sahara and I put them on the rears with no problems with clearance or anything.

Not even any "X"... my X with 24s package has the 255/75/r17 tires on it... not good.

And what are the Sahara and Rubicon owners supposed to use when the CHP says you must have chains? "Sorry, Officer...the book says I can't use chains."
Most likely this will what you will encounter

Before driving, check with the Caltrans Highway Information Network (CHIN) 800.427.7623

SR 38

I so agree with you. 4 years in South Dakota with a 2 wheel drive Chevy Nova. Never ever was requires to have chains or was there ever a chain requirment on any Black Hills' roads.

A dozen of so years ago I spent a few nights up in Crestline. It snowed one night and I drove around up there without chains with a 2 WD subcompact yet I saw vehicles with chains. Going back down the hill I saw why...the CHP had a checkpoint.

But to answer your question as to "what's the deal" one word...IDIOTs. Idiot drivers, law makers etc.

As you may have noticed...some people in So Cal just don't know how to drive even under dry conditions, never mind throwing in some rain or snow so I guess chains are used to prevent a total closure of roads because some think they can go where no man has gone before.

i need to know where to buy chains for 35s. i live in apple valley on the back side of big bear on unmaintained roads. last week i had a 4' snow drift across my rd. it took about 4-5 attempts to break through. the next morning i helped 4 neighbors out of either ditches or just plain stuck in snow. chains would have been nice. it was cool being the only guy cruising around the neighborhood in 2' of snow early thurs. morning
