Default Engine cleaning tips?

So I found a few pretty good mud holes out at Big Scrub a couple of weeks ago. (Careful out there as I nearly got a $500.00 fine) The Jeep was covered. It took me about three hours of cleaning just to find the paint. Well I never popped the hood and today I decided to take a look. Holy Crap It's really bad!! I'll try to post a few pic's tomorrow.

Any suggestions on how to get it clean?
