Default 2007 3.8 oil burners

So my 2007 is burining oil. I try to keep track and do for the most part. Was caught once 3 qts low. 38K miles on it and I put on about 6k miles a year. Second owner. Not my daily driver.

I will change my plugs and PCV Valve soon. Any other recomendations other than just keep checking and adding oil when low?

Welcome to the club! I don't want to be "that guy" but search on "oil consumption" and enjoy the wealth of information and misinformation.

I personally don't have any advice of value, my JK is not my daily driver anymore so my mileage has dropped to 2k/ year, not so much a bother for me anymore. I just keep her topped off.

I googled searched it to death and read all sorts of info. Just looking for some updated fresh info. I dont mind adding oil since it takes so long (time not miles) to get to that point. Just wondering if anyone had any long term issues

Mine started buring 1qt every 1500 or so around 32k and now at 90k. Still going strong, plugs never look bad but long term I do fear for my cats processing that much oil ... still passes yearly inspection at this point.

I think in 2014 I'm pulling the motor to rebuild and hopefully identify what the issue is ... it wasn't the PCV. I may try the seafoam to see if carbon build up ... I have my doubts.

Take it to a dealer and start an oil consumption test. Once that is done, change the PCV valve, and switch to a thicker oil like 5w30 or 10w30. The dealer may do the new PCV valve right away.

I burn about a qt every 3k. I got worried and started checking the oil every time i get fuel. Could save me a motor. I have the death tick and the start up. I did notice where the cats bolt on to the headers was leaking a little bit and i think thats where the start up tick is coming from. I did replace the headers a while ago. Cracked both of them pretty bad. I also tow a boat in the summer almost every weekend. So im thinking thats where i burn the oild from. Not a big deal a qt every 3k is not abnormal. just got to make sure to check it and not run it dry. I would suggest to pull the heat sheild off the headers and check for cracks, Also check the header/cat bolts, they work them selfs lose after a while. Other than that done 10k+ on death tick. Still running strong... somehow. Ill mess with the motor later and try to see what the problem is. I think i have a bad hydro lifter.

That is a little excessive. What was the time frame? Id personally do a leak down / compression test to see if the rings are damaged at all and causing blow by. Ive seen blow by on 3.8L's with + 90k Miles... Not under 40k. Update us.

I'm adding about 2.5 quarts between oil changes (5000kms) and I'm at 57,000miles. I changed over to 10w30 a few days ago so we'll see if that helps any. Also read on a couple of threads here that guys switched to 10w40 with good results but they're in warmer climates and I'm up north so I'll likely steer clear of such a heavy oil for now. I went from 5w20->5w30 and it still consumed oil. Now went from 5w30->10w30 which has yet to be determined if there's a change. If 10w30 doesn't help I'll give 5w40 a go.

I have a 2009 JKU, it has 26,000 miles on it. Just had it in for an oil change a couple weeks ago. The dealers mechanic came and told me there wasn't much oil in it. They told me that those engines come with low friction piston rings. This is what's causing the oil consumption. It's still under warranty. They advised me to keep an eye on it and if it starts to get low again to bring it in so they may document it, add oil and then turn it in for warranty. Then replace the piston rings. Hopefully this helps you guys.

I would take it back immediately and have them start an oil consumption test. I would take care of it now while you still have a warranty. The situation is not going to get better on its own...
