Default 2010 Manual Compass Calibration?

I can not enter the variance mode. Here are the instructions as per the owners manual:

Manual Compass Calibration
NOTE: Before attempting a manual compass calibration,
the engine must be running and the transmission
in the PARK position (if equipped).
If the compass appears erratic or inaccurate and the
variance has been properly set, you may wish to manually
recalibrate the compass. To manually calibrate the
compass:
1. First enter the variance mode. Press and hold the left
button (located on the instrument cluster) for approximately
10 seconds to enter the variance mode, and
release the button when the VAR (Compass Variance)
symbol appears.

So how do you enter the "variance mode"? The above instructions do not work. Thanks for any help.

Just to get the obvious question out of the way:
Are you holding the button until the VAR symbol appears, or are you going by the 10 second requirement?

I have held to as long as 30 seconds and "VAR" does not appear.

When mine is showing direction, and temp, I hold the left button. In about 2 seconds, the temp changes from °F to °C. Continuing to hold the button for about 10 seconds, VAR and the current zone appears, then I let go.

When you hold the button, does yours change from one temp scale to the other?

Yes, It changes from degrees F to degrees C. I continue to hold the left button for up to 30 seconds but "VAR" does not appear.

Disreguard.

I have the RER NAV radio.

As per the Owner's manual CD that came with the JK:

If vehicle is equipped with UConnect gps NAV radio, the NAV system will provide the compass direction ..... Therefore, no manual calibration is possible.

On another note, I learned that if you press and hold the right button while in the seasonal odometer mode, the display will change from miles to hours.

If they are going to disable setting the magnetic declination, then why the heck didn't they just disable that compass display entirely?

I searched the 2010 owners manual, and "seasonal odometer" doesn't appear.

What is it?

The "seasonal odometer" display is the accumulative mileage display, and of course, can not be reset. It is not the "trip odometer", which is the other odometer display and which can be reset.

With the NAV, it is not that the declination (variance) setting is disabled on the compass display, it is that the NAV does the declination calculation automatically based on the gps geo-coordinated and then sends the correct heading to the compass display on the driver information display. Therefore, the compass display is always correct, thanks to the NAV's gps, and never needs a manual variance calibration.
