Default 2012 3.6.... 5w-30 or 5w-20?

I think I have one of the earlier 2012's (build date March 2012) and the iPhone app as well as the paper-printed maintenance guide says to put 5-30 oil in the vehicle. However, I did see for 2013's that they've revised the oil weights and now recommend 5-20.

Did they actually make a change to the engine, or did they just revise the oil spec? Should we be putting 5-20 in our 2012's or the recommended 5-30?

Sorry if this has been discussed before... I pulled up an old thread on here and it didn't really answer the question.

I hate 20 weight oil. I'm putting 5w-30 in mine. I think 20 weight is too thin.

If you like your warranty, only put recommended oil into your JK. 5w20 is too thin anyway.

That's my question, though... 5w20 is recommended in the newer-build 3.6's. I've read about some of the lifter issues/head issues and it appears that just after the first run of 3.6's, they revised the oil spec, but I'm not sure what, if anything, they did to the engine. It appears I have an early 3.6 and the printed booklet says 5w30. I'll probably put that in for my first change because if anything goes wrong, I can point to the book and say, "see?" -I did what it asked But if Chrysler is telling new owners to put 5w20 in there, and that's what's actually best for these engines, then I might as well just save myself the headache and put in 5w20 for my first change.

Just talk to your dealer and see what they say. I'm sticking with 5w30 in my 2012 JKUR , even after a head replacement. I always thought 5w20 was too thin especially in my old 3.8 oil sucker.

5w20 must be a misprint

Use what the manual calls for if you want the warranty to cover any engine issues. If you have engine problems it is very likely they will test the oil and if you don't pass, they may give you problems covering the warranty. Also keep oil change invoices and / or receipts to prove you do regular changes.

That's very, very interesting. I also have a 12 and my manual says 5W30. Is this an early or late 12 build? I'm wondering if Chrysler changed something in mid-stream on the oil weight.
