2nd gear crunch.
On a side note, many people have found that by using an additive or different aftermarket transmission fluid (Royal Purple, Redline, etc) that the shifting and smoothness of the transmission is greatly improved. However others have pointed out that if the dealer's mechanics find evidence of this Chrysler may use this as a basis to refuse warranty should the box fail at a later stage. So you're kinda damned if you do, damned if you don't it seems...
I had all syncro replaced as well as second gear and it stopped the stick from being thrown out of second gear but it is just as rough as ever. My engine actually makes a rattle(ish) noise in second gear when i allow the RPMs to get down below 1. My buddies jeep sounds great throughout the tac my mine in second is not nice at all.
Also when I took mine in to have the tranny looked at they told me they didnt think there was anything wrong with it, unitl they took it apart and found metal shavings.

I've seen other cars that have a "lazy" slave or master cylinder that will crunch second gear cause first gear is short enough that the fluid doesn't have time to reset before the shift causing the clutch not to fully engage.

I have a 07 sahara unlimited that has a crunchy 2nd gear when it get really cold. If it is somewhat warm outside ( 30's) it is fine. I just live with it, it's not the worst manual tranny I've ever had to deal with.
Second gear catches in mine. The dealer says it's the throwout bearing and won't touch it unless I'm paying. Second is the only gear that does it, and if it's a little cold it's very hard to get it into second.

I have the exact same problem on a 2008 Sahara. i have 44k on the clock and switched to using Royal Purple. I find that leting the RPM's return to under the 2k mark or shifting from 1st to Neutral Center then pulling back left and down to second would help.
Sitting at a stop light shifting gears 1-2-3-4-5-6 the only gear that catches is 2nd and it only catches once if i shift back to second it wont catch

Nice to know theres others. I have a 2010 and mine does it also in second gear. My last 94 YJ felt so much better and didn't feel like a plastic toy like driving the JK does.
Regret selling it so much.

Hi,
I have around 5000 miles on my 2010 Unlimited Rubi. The issue I am having is that every once in a while when shifting from 1st to second I what I can describe as a crunch noise as the shifter enters second gear. (it never happens when I down shift)
As this happens randomly the dealership claims they can't replicate it. It has been like this since I got the Jeep and I tried the following:
1. Pulling the shifter further in.
2. Keeping the RPMs high/low
3. Slow/fast shifting
None of these prevented the issue.
For the record I have been driving stick for 20 years and this is my third manual Jeep. (YJ and TJ)
Is this Normal? It doesn't feel right and takes the joy of driving the jeep around town.
on a side note, the mechanic at the dealership laughed when I told him it would be nice to build up the jeep and give it to my son in 14 years. He asked me if I truly expect the Jeep to last that long.
Help please.
