Default 2nd gear issue

my jeep is only maybe a month old. i bought it from a dealer with 8k miles on, it now has 8600. im not new to driving stick and ive had a previous manual jeep.

when i test drove the jeep all was fine, but within the last 2 weeks it has a hard time getting into second gear, sometimes i have to wait for it to "fall into place" because i dont slam it into gear and i obviously dont rip gears on a jeep. sometimes double clutching helps.

could the syncros be going already at 8600 miles? not sure how the previous owner drove the jeep, but i dont slam my gears or drive it like a tool. i do have the extended bumper to bumper warranty where i pay $100 one time only deductible for any warranty work up to 68k miles.

thanks in advance

Default Clutch/ syncro issue

gtlegg Hi! sounds more like your clutch is not quite releasing, this will give a feeling that the syncroniser is not doing its job. There are several problems cropping up on the JK clutches that could be causing problems. The throwout bearing and clutch discs are subject to TSB's. The slave cylinder on the clutch also has been having some issues. Usually a syncro is chewed up by a bad shift or is cracked by a bad shift. A really high mileage vehicle can have a syncro fail, it won't stay in gear or ''jumps'' out of gear when letting off the gas.Remember the basic warranty is 3yrs/36000 miles NO deductible. Your basic should cover this for you. Just a few thoughts hope it helps......Good Luck!!!

I've had this exact same problem with mine since new. It is immensely worse when it gets cold out, like down in the single digit temperatures. It's been in to two different dealership service departments. It only shifts hard from 1st to 2nd, it is fine from 3rd down to 2nd, and every other gear shift is smooth and easy. Both service departments called Chrysler before they would take anything apart, they apparently won't get reimbursed for warranty work that isn't okayed on a big teardown. Both dealerships were told by Chrysler "This is a characteristic of this transmission" so the dealers won't do anything about it even though their service techs agree that this isn't right. I have paperwork to show that I have complained and had the JK in two shops so I have documentation if something goes really amiss. So far, at 15000 miles, nothing drastic has happened. I think it is just the synchro ring for the 1st to 2nd shift that doesn't get things up to speed that makes the shift hard. I've changed to Royal Purple synthetic in the transmission and this has helped quite a bit but it still isn't perfect. I guess you just have to learn to live with the problem. My opinion of Chrysler's support has gone right in the toilet over this issue. Last Chrysler for me. If I were you, I would take your JK into a dealer and have them check it out, it is still under warranty and the worst thing they can tell you is "This is a characteristic of this transmission". Good luck, I don't think I would get too worried over something getting ready to go kaput though. It's more of an annoyance than anything. At 8600 miles you shouldn't have to pay any deductible as the original warranty should still be in effect until 3yrs./36000 miles.

Take the Jeep for a little drive to warm and mix up the transmission oil.
Remove the fill plug and note the fluid level.
Draw out some oil and look to see if there is metal in the oil.
Top off the level if needed, reinstall the fill plug.
If the oil had metal in it, take the sample to the dealer and see what they have to say.
If it doesn't have metal in the oil sample, your problem is most likely elsewhere.

This may be due to the fly by wire gas pedal set up. It took me some time to get used to the little delay when using the throttle. There are numerous threads on here about the crappy feel to the gas pedal and the delayed reaction time it has.

Don't discount post #4. It's an easy check to do.
