Default Air Conditioner Performance

How does everyone's air conditioner work?

Mine sorta seems bad. I took it into the dealer, and they said there was a leak. They fixed it, and it seems better, but it still sucks.

It sorta cycles on and off seems like. When it gets cold, its nice, but that only last 10-20 seconds. Then it seems to warm up a little and cycle back and forth. Does anyone else noticed this? When its cold, it blows about 42-45 degrees. When it warms up, its about 50 - 55. Then it cycles back on and blows colder.

What do you guys think?

Mine's cold all the time it's on. It's too cold for me I'd rather have the top off Last time I turned the air condition on it smelled like Florida swamp mud

I have no problems with mine...but I am positive I have seen a thread on here before, and others had the same problem.

There are also quite a few write ups on insulating the hardtop, which for some also helps.

The general rule of thumb for dealers and A/C shops is if the A/C can blow 20 degrees cooler than the ambient temp outside, it's doin it's job. It's a cop out, I know, but that's usually the standard. Mine works fine, by the way.

Mine is very cold, I don't use it too often but when I do it's cold the entire time.

the A/C issue is the fact the due to the way EPA measures fuel economy car manufacturers are required to test MPG with the A/C on.. so they tend to cycle the unit out when the output vent temp is around 50-55 degrees which is cool but not the ice bone chilling cold that some (including me) like...

Jeep uses an H-valve (a fake TxV sort of) and an evaporator temperature sensor to control the compressor cycling...

the evaporator temperature sensor is a wierd value thermistor... its not a standard 10k device... however it can be skewed allowing the compressor to stay in longer...

these devices typically have a 5% tolerance level in them which can result in different people having different results...

I ended up popping a 20K ohm resistor across (in parallel) with my sensor and am now getting 40-45 degree air on average from the vents.. an 18K ohm resistor dropped the vent temp to the high 30's however It also started to freeze the evaporator core.. so I backed off a little...
MUCH better than the original 50+ degree air..

because of the differences in the tolerances of the sensors you may need t play with tyhe resistor values a little to get it calibrated just right.... the lower the value resistor the colder the air although more risk of freeze-up and freezing up solid *CAN* damage the air-conditioner if left out of control.. the higher value resistor the less effect it will have...

id say 15k-25k ohms is the range needed..

Thanks for all the replies. My air conditioner is not cold. And its upper 80's lower 90's here. Barely does the job. When you spend so much on a vehicle, you sorta want it to work. I guess I'll take it back to them and let them tell me its as cold as R134a gets... Anyone else with this oscillating / cycling compressor problem? What could that be?
