Stock JK Tech Bulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.

Am I stupid for even thinking about this?

If it is what you really want, and can afford it...trade it in.

All the rest of the crap about who drives what is just internet mush. Get what makes YOU happy.

Also depends on how long you're going to keep it. Autos are covered by warranty. Stick have worse resale value. I like sticks, but there really isn't an advantage to them with modern autos... Unless you just like shifting.

+1. If it'll make you happy, do it.
Personally, I love my Auto. I'm a truck driver by profession, so at the end if the day, the last thing I want to do is shift some more, lol! Wheeling on big rocks is easier, since I don't stall like some folks I know do with their manuals. I don't have to worry about shifting in deep water crossings, etc.

Don't want to change the subject, but I just won't let this go unchallenged. There are a number of advantages. I'm going to cite just one: Can push start. That, IMHO, is the number one reason a Jeep that's take into remote places should have a manual.

I had a auto 07 and switched to a 12 manual. Rock climbing is easier with an auto- yes. Driving is easier as well. They also make automatic sports cars and automatic motorcycle if that's the type of driving you prefer. I think having real control over what gear I am in is worth the teeny bit of extra work. (Although people like using tiptronic style shifting too)

I prefer manual.

Do like I do and make a list of pros and cons and see which one wins. In the end it will come down to what makes YOU happy and not what others think. I personally drive a 6 speed but there are time I'm jealous of my buddies Auto's on the steep rocky stuff. However mine is a Rubi so stalling hasn't happened yet I can even put my foot on the brake and it doesn't stall. Most important enjoy your Jeep whichever you choose!

I like my 6 speed in my 2012 JK. Yes it rattles, and shifts like a truck. It is a top loader with a longer throw. I also have a 98 XJ with an automatic. I like the manual better.
My worry with the automatic is when it gives up, I really don't feel like tearing it apart. I did that work when I was younger.
The JK has more power, but the XJ has a better power band (4liter). If the XJ was a manual I would love it.

The best thing about wheeling with a standard is being able to select what gear you want to be in and being in tune with your vehicle. Yet some say it is easier to off road with an automatic. My advice would be do what makes you happy. That is why I went with the standard transmission. Good luck with your decision!
