i think its armor all... 'multi-purpose auto cleaner' it comes in a white pump spray bottle with a a blue and black label and it is designed for use on fabric. follow the directions and do it a couple times.

i know mayonnaise or pure lard will take tar off skin like nobodys business... but im not sure how it will do on fabric.

WD40 might work.

Resolve makes a "High Traffic Foam" in a red aeresol that foams up ... It's safe to use on auto upholstery too. I used it on my JK rear seat to clean up some chocolate fudge from my friend on a late night drunken mcdonald's binge ...

ROOFING TAR??? thats no chocolate stain.... youd have to use something that breaks down the tar first no? I would try a dab of bug/tar remover or gasoline on a rag i dotnthink it would mess up the fabric but wont smell too good...1st get the tar to break up then follow with a good cleanser, i used to used "tuff stuff" in a spray can i believe it had an agitator on it... well good luck.. I used to tan interior and was a pain to keep clean, tuff stuff helped a bit

roofing tar? good luck with that.
tar is petroleum based, so something like mineral spirits, turpentine or gasoline will dissolve it, but you'll get that smell. it's basically a trade-off.
you can try go-jo. it works for the hands, but not sure about fabrics.

Try using acetone, it will break up the tar. Just dab it it on so it doesn't just spread out. Once you get most of it out give some upholstry cleaner a try.

put tape over the stain and call it done. or use starting fluid. get rid of any grease, tar, oils.
