Default Auto Trans Headaches...

08 4dr. Auto Trans.

On occasion when slowing from a cruising speed then getting back on the gas the torque converter will refuse to unlock, then when it does unlock it double down shifts, and clunks into gear.

Dealer already reflashed and it was better for about 1k miles. It doesn't seem to match any of the 3 TSBs and I can't find any other incidents of it online.

Anybody else get this one?

Yup mine does it, dealer reflashed, even replaced the torque converter. Each time just fixed it for awhile then it came back.

It must be something with the software cause the tech told me each time he reset the software and when I drove it, it was smooth as butter and then after a few hundred miles the new software goes back to doing it.

Either that or its a solenoid or tranny pump?

I have no idea. Mine throws no codes so I have learned to live with it. Thats the least of my issues with the Jeep at this point.

It looks like both of you have changed your tire sizes. My A/T was driving me crazy too doing the same thing. It got really bad when I changed my gears. Try the AEV Procal module. I reset the tire size and then reset the gear ratio with it. Now the double shifting and skipped points are gone. If it comes back it's gonna take all of three minutes to reset it. My dealer's really proud of his Star machine and the cost of the module was about 1 1/2 flashes. To be able to turn off the stupid lane change flashers and hook my fogs up for running lights totally put it over the top.

Welcome to the club. I've had the reflash and the TC has now been replaced twice. Still does it. There are several threads on this particular subject. Suffice to say, if you live in an area where the topography is hilly and the speed limits low, you are going to have this problem. The auto transmission techs that I've talked to in this area are all VERY familiar with the 42rle as it comes in a number of Chrysler products (Nitro, 300, minivan, JK, etc.) and is a constant source of trouble. Three different techs have told me that this is a 100,000 mile tranny at the absolute outside. Thanks Chrysler.

As far as tire size being the issue, I waited for better than a year to upgrade from the stock 29s since my Jeep was having these issues..........finally said F it and installed Rubi wheels and tires (32s) and it has actually improved the driveability (without any flash).

Sounds related to the shift point 'learning' system to me.

A tranny reset would make it forget about its learned behavior, and after a couple hundred miles it would think it learnt again.

Do those of you with this problem think you drive conservatively on the road, or aggressively?

I thought your issue was back Skibum?

It's still there, just not as bad since I put the 32s on it. Don't ask me why. I was going to get it flashed for the larger tires but I drove it for awhile first then decided against it. Computer and transmission seem to prefer the larger rubber.

Conservatively. I will admit however, that when you drive it like you stole it, the trans works somewhat better. BUT, my gas mileage drops to about 12 mpg.

I have been looking in to this. I think the problem is 4th hear or OD is too high of a ratio. When the RPM's are under 3000 the engine does not have enough torque to climb even the slightest hill. It will not unlock the torque converter in an attempt to get better gas mileage. Then when you push the gas hard enough to make it shift, it drops to 3rd and unlocks the torque converter. Its not a nice shift because of the large gear ratio change.

When you get reflashed or a new converter installed it won't lock for so many miles till it goes through the break in cycle.

I don't like what it does but it is designed to work that way. You won't get it "Fixed" at the dealer. There is no way to fix it without a different tranny.

I agree with derff's assessment. Page 277 of the owner's manual describes this "feature." Still, I don't think it works as advertised:

When the vehicle speed drops or during acceleration, the clutch automatically and smoothly disengages.
