I would agree that in high wheelspin scenarios it is not effective. I have seen it do well on muddy terrain (but not deep mud bogs though). I did do a sandy trail last summer and I had no issues at all.

Yeah, what i was talking about has nothing to do with any kind of electronically controlled braking system.
By using the brake and the gas, some, you can get some posi-effect. Its nothing big, but sometimes you only need a little movement to get to alot more traction than you have.
Again, its no replacement for a posi or a real locker.

There's a few facts and a whole bunch of opinion on this thread. If you have an open rear diff, I doubt the BLD alone is gonna get you that much farther up the trail. Having it in combo with the LSD has allowed me to keep up with the big boys. Again, we're talking JK's , not TJ's, CJ's or S10's. If they haven't got it figured out on this model, they're damn close.

My experience with the brake lock differential started with my 07 xterra 2 wheel drive. My primary vehicle is my 08 JK, but I still have the xterra. The xterra has an on or off switch. When in the slick stuff I turn it off and it does apply power to both rear wheels with all other esp fuctions turned off. You can do burn outs with both rear wheels as the xterra has a kick-ass engine. The brake lock is really not designed for off road use, but rather to help you get unstuck. When is constant use off road, there is a sensor that monitors the heat build up in your brakes. Once that triggers they stop working until they cool down. They're nice in the jeep 4x4 except even though the manual states that in "full off mode" all esp functions are off exept the BLD, I'm not experiencing that like the xterra. We had a nice heavy rain down here in texas so I headed out to the lake to try them. We have that slippery, greazy clay down here. So as I'm spinning in half circles, with my tread mud packed all terrains, trying to gain control I can tell the brake locks are kicking in, but also I notice I can't get any rpms out of the engine. I think the esp stability doesn't turn off. Doesn't help you spin out of things. Either that or I mistakingly only had it in partial off mode. But the manual states "partial mode will allow some spinning before engaging brake lock". Anyway the only way I could get moving was to totally stop and stabilize, then I could get crawling and slowly sliding my way out. Lockers are better for this stuff, but the brake locks work great if you realize their limitations. Better to have them than not to have them as they will help get you unstuck. If you have a wheel off the ground with an open differential, that axle is useless. Brake lock will transfer power to the wheel that is planted. And besides, they're free as standard equipment!
