Default Broken Shift Lever - '08 Rubicon Unlimited

I was out today with my wife at a mall. Went in and ran a couple errands and heading back out to visit some friends. Got in the Jeep, started up, foot on brake, dropped the E-Brake and then shifted into reverse, over and back just like the nice pic on the lever knob. I had the lever back to what I thought was in reverse, but I was able to keep going. I thought - Hmmmm odd. But then it got weirder and the whole lever twisted and came up in my hand almost hitting my wife in the passenger seat.

No one was hurt (expect my poor Jeep) I'm sitting there in utter disbelief thinking WTF

Has anyone ever had this happen or heard of it happening???
I'm dumbfounded that something like this could happen. When I looked at the lever where it broke I'm thinking that this was NOT engineered right. The weld looks questionable and there appears to be noticeable rust. The other thing that seems weird is that it only seemed to be held on with a simple plate and stitch weld. I'm not a welder, machinist or fabricator by any means, but c'mon - that just doesn't look right.

Had it towed back to my local dealer (about 80km - thank god for CAA) and they will have a look at it Monday morning. A Big THANK YOU out to my local dealer because they loaned my one of their used cars on the lot because all the rental places were closed or didn't have a car.

I'll be working with the dealer to see what Chrysler is going to do aside from the obvious repair.

Please
- anyone reply and let me know if you have seen this or heard of it.

Cheers,

Ant

Here's an old thread that might be similar...

Checked battery, relays, fuses, all good, yes I carry a multi-meter(Engineer), climbed back in. Turned on the ignition, mashed the brake and tried to move the shift lever, would not move, uh oh… looked up at the dash and the transmission position indicator is showing it’s in reverse, oh no… Tried to move the shift lever again, it moves this time, now I’m really pissed because the only thing that moved was the lever, *%&$(), You can’t start an auto with it in reverse, and about this time it starts to roll away, glad I was in in it. It appears the shift linkage has decided to disconnect itself someplace between the console and the transmission. Now, on this long 4 day weekend, sunny hot, 4 day weekend and plans for a trek through the Nantahala Forest, I am without my friend… Towed to local dealer, to sit, all by herself, until Tuesday, when the techs. come in. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue with the linkage.

Now it's stuck in park although the floor shifter reads 1st so I can't take the key out? WTF!!

I crawled under it to check out the linkage and it appears to be loose, but I couldn't get a good look because the exhaust is flippin' hot! Can you say ouch!!

Of course I'll have to get the dealer to check this out, but I can't drive it. A tow truck would be embarrassing I've got to try to get this into drive so I can take it to the dealer on Monday.

No worries aldaman

Appreciate the search in the forum. I didn't find anything when I had a look

I know its covered under warranty. 14000km and not even a year old yet.

I'll post an update once I talk with the dealer Monday.

Again, if anyone else has seen or heard of this please post.

Cheers,

Ant

100,000 wranglers a year, at 99.9 % shifter reliability thats still a hundred or so that break off. You have won the lottery! At least your dealer is treating you well. Best of Luck!!!

Well, was at the dealer this morning. So far so good (not that much has happened) Spoke to Service and they are going to have a look and let me know. Warned them I didn't know if it is in neutral or not. Would likely have to push it into the garage. They did help get me a rental and on my way pretty quickly. Cheers to my local Dealership again. Hoping they can help facilitate something with Chrysler to help compensate me. Just think it sucks that the Road-Side Assistance limits you to the nearest dealer up to 35km. I was about 80km from home and didn't want to leave my Jeep at another Dealer and have to get back and forth. Also kinda sucks that a rental on the day of the incident is not covered. What am I to do on a late saturday afternoon when ANY dealer is not open until Monday morning???

I'll post an update once I have more.

Cheers,

Happy Days!!!!
Got my JK back from the dealer today.

They were able to order the parts and have them shipped in this morning and then installed. I figured it would be a pretty straight forward install as long as nothing was messed up in the transmisison. Again, a big thank you to my local dealer. They have been great everytime I've been in.

NEXT MISSION: Call Chrysler and see what they say and do for me.
I know it's a happy ending and I have my JK back, but I keep running the "What-If" scenarios. Going down the highway and going to shift and then suddenly . . .

At least I can hopefully raise concern with Chrysler-Jeep to re-think some of their design and the possible "What-If" . . .

Not sure if anyone has any sage advice for dealing with "The Corporation".

If anyone has seen or heard of anything similar, PLEASE let me know. Not looking to gather a class action or anything, but the more information the better to throw at Chrysler.

Cheers,
