not sure who you have for insurance but my company (USAA) will repair or replace a windshield 2 times a year at no cost. I've had it done a few time and it never messes with my rates.

That's because you live in Florida. In Florida, there's a statute where auto insurance policies have to replace cracked windshields while waiving the deductible. Usually, they will try to fix a chip, but if it's a crack they'll replace the whole thing. Other states do this too, not sure which one's.

I'm on my second (this one only lived about 90 days before being broken by a tiny rock thrown from the tread of a truck ahead of me). I like you will wait until the day it interferes with my field of view.

FJ owners report a lot of the same misery. Big, flat piece of glass don't deflect the incoming debris @ road speeds. Cracks and stars are the result.

Yeah, every one of my cracks developed from a tiny rock chip on the very edge of the glass. Which the glass peeps told me is the worst place to get hit. I was thinkin about getting a rubber gasket like on the CJ's and TJ's run around it to at least help prevent the edge cracks.

That's a pretty good idea, mk. If you brainstorm a specific remedy, let me know.
