Burning Oil > Misfiring > Valve Job
Bought a used 07 Unlimited X a couple years ago and its kind of been a pain in my ass since. Soon after I bought it I brought it to a local mechanic and had a full fluid/lube change, new spark plugs, etc. I started to get misfires and brought it back to him to have him check his work. He told me the plugs were fine but my wires were bad and arching/shorting (I don't know why he didn't include this in the initial consumables replacement but I guess I over looked it too). I replaced the wires myself and she ran great...for a while.
Some time and a few miles later, my throw out bearing went so a full clutch job seemed like the logical thing to do. Swapped the clutch (used a different local mechanic) and $850 later back on the road...for a while. Just a few weeks ago I started to hear the throw out bearing start to make noise again. WTF! Pulled out my paper work...alright! Just under a year ago they did the work so its under their shop warranty so I bring it back to them. They agree its got to be the throw out bearing again so they pull it all apart. They tell me they couldn't figure out where the sound was coming from but the supplier replaced the parts under warranty anyway so I should be good once they put it all back together. But then they went to test drive it...
Turns out, conveniently while in the hands of the mechanic, my misfire problem showed back up with a vengeance during the test drive. They wanted to swap out the plugs and wires for $280. I told them to give it back to me so I could experience what they were and so I could change the plugs and wires myself (labor prices in San Diego are ridiculous). OK...yeah, she's struggling. Super weird because I had just driven her all weekend with no symptoms or noticeable misfire before dropping her off at the shop for the clutch work. New plugs and wires didn't help. I had been burning oil and there was evidence of that on a plug or two. Now things are about to get pricey!
Brought it back to the mechanic the next morning and they did some diagnostics. A compression test showed low erratic compression in one of the cylinders during acceleration. They now have her torn apart and are doing a valve job, which I guess is good news considering I was looking up prices of new engines for a minute. They said there was some carbon in the bad cylinder but otherwise looked good and that the parts (i guess the head?) was at the machinist. They should be getting them back and putting her back together this week.
They say this should solve all my problems. Do you guys agree? Anyone experience similar causes to their oil burning and misfiring symptoms? I'm by no means an auto mechanic, but I understand mechanics in general so any explanation of what failed, why, or the process to fix it would be appreciated.
Finally, I can't help but wonder if the guy I bought this Jeep from knew it was about to require several thousand dollars of repairs within 10,000mi and 2 years of selling it to me. So frustrating! Thoughts?
