Default Clock Spring

2013 JKU 92K mi. Have intermittent airbag warning, the cruise doesn't work, and occasional ABS warning. This must be a bad clock spring, right? Dealer wants $175 to run a scan and diagnose. Thinking about saving the diagnostic $ and just replacing the $400 clock spring myself.
Does anyone think this is a good strategy? Get a little sick every time I step foot on the lot.

That is the same logic I typically use. I replaced clockspring on my '13 before and used the Crown unit which is a decent bit cheaper than the Mopar. I've had no issues with it in the last couple years. The job is really straightforward. Hardest part for me was getting the steering wheel off the splines which was a little tricky. I can't recall how I did that but using most of the traditional pullers didn't work.

Thanks. Yea the Crown is less than half the price of MOPAR. Appreciate the feedback!

Great news. No recall, but my VIN does qualify for the S33 warranty extension on the clock spring. Will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow to confirm. Thanks for the help!

They will only replace it once for free. They use the same part that just breaks all over again. Now I have to do the repair and pay for the second one on my own. Just a heads up. The warranty is extended but you only get the clock spring replaced once. My dealer repair just lasted me 3 years.

Right, the warranty part is a different part #. And it's on backorder.

My logic on this was they want $175 just for the scan diagnostic. The BlueDriver scan tool which gets used with your smartphone costs $99 and unlike the inexpensive $20 apps is an "enhanced" diagnostic code reader which can read ABS, and Airbag Codes as well, essentially the same as the dealership. So for less $, I was able to purchase a tool to be able to get all the same information as the dealership could get with their expensive scan tool that they want to charge you $175 for each use and then there's going to be charges on top of that to do the actual work. Every time I had to go to the dealer or any other service station for that matter, I informed them I already had the list of logged diagnostic codes and handed it to them. They would usually come back with "Well, your reader can't read "all" the codes." Where, I would inform them yes it can, it's an enhanced code reader and I'm not going to pay you to use yours to find out the exact same information. They eventually caved in where they decided to not charge me for the scan and use their scan tool anyways since they didn't want to get stuck relying on my information but at no charge to me.

My T. has a nice write-up on the multiple scan tool apps available which is stickied to the top of this forum. I would say between BlueDriver and OBD JScan I can do most everything to diagnose as well as reprogram items on my JK. Over the course of time they both have saved me a ton of $. With JScan recently I was able to perform a complete ABS module diagnosis and bleed and if I had to replace the ABS-Module, I would be able to reprogram the new module to match my VIN. These are typically, dealership only functions that can be performed where you pay them lots of money to perform those tasks. Both setups combined cost less than one dealership scan charge.
