Go to a shop have it load tested. If it passes keep it. If it fails upgrade.

Is there a way to do this myself?

Get a load tester... You can probably go to AutoZone and chances are they will do it for free. It takes about 10 seconds to do.

So is this a good interval to put a new one in?

Just had to replace the battery in the wifes stock 07 unlimited bought in Oct 06. We've got just over 4 years on it , and out of nowhere it just died Saterday morning on her. Jumped the thing using my XJ, and it started right up and had no problems driving. She drove it home and it appeared to be OK, as it started right up the few times I tried it. Thought about it and since it had 4 years on it, could not trust it to get her through this winter. Put a Sears DieHard Platinum in it Saturday afternoon. Feel better about it now.
From all that I've read, we were luckly to get a bit over 4 years out of it.

Default Replace.

It's not worth getting stranded somewhere and the battery will crap out with little to no warning.
