Default Confirmed steering boxes are junk..

So I sent in my box for a rebuild to West Texas Offroad and he pretty much confirmed what I thought. They have moved to new boxes made in China starting in late 09 models. The original boxes were weak but these are even weaker.

They have very cheap bearings and not enough bearings in the pack. He said basically they could have used 150% more bearings but did not. Further more they made these new Chinese boxes so that you can't really rebuild them. They are throw away boxes.

He said basically everywhere Chrysler could save a penny on the JK they did. Chrysler won't even release the maker of the box but the part number can be traced back to China.

It amazes me, so many people had steering issues to begin with and the crappy box was a big problem, so does Chrysler improve the weak box? NO! They use an even cheaper box from China in the newer models to line their pockets even more!

I guess Chrysler never changes..

So what are you doing? Are they any custom boxes out there? Mine is clunking again, did so a few weeks after the intermediate shaft was replaced. Getting ready to take it back in for more warranty work.

The only option is hydro is which insane if you are stock or even moderately lifted.

I called PSC about building a better box but they said it would not be cost effective as it would cost a lot for them to research and cast a whole new box.

The only thing we can't beef up now with aftermarket is the box so that is the weak point. If an aftermarket company made a better box I think they would make a lot of money..

Wow, that is disappointing to say the least. Guess I will continue going the "dealer replace under warranty route" until something is done. I'll talk to my dealer and see if they will replace the box.

No PSC just rebuilds the stock box and taps it for hydro assist.

The one with the new steering gear is listed as off-road use.
The kit for on-road use uses your original steering box.

If anyone made a replacement, I would buy it in a second. I'm lifted, but not $1600 steering box lifted.
