Default Cracked windshield due to cold weather and hot defrost

Well, it's -25c here, and I just got 2 nice big cracks in the windshield after cranking the defrost.

One crack on the bottom, starting just to the right of center, heads up about 3" then turns hard left and ends just above the VIN plate. The 2nd crack is on the top, starting about the middle, heads down about 3", then hard right for about a foot or so.

The cracks started entirely on their own, there are no chips or rock-induced cracks on the paths of either crack.

Do you think I'll be able to get a warranty replacement?

Also, be warned! Don't crank the defrost on max heat when it's damn cold out!

No cracks yet and I hope it does not, just the engine temp. guage does not like to work when the temp. is below 20* f.

That is bulls#@$$$^$ they should replace it if there is no evidence of a stone chip then there must have been a problem with the glass to begin with and for it to happen to more than one person. I have never heard of any other vehicle having this happen ....I thought that is why the glass is tempered to keep it from from having this kind of issue . Is this one more thing they cut corners on?

There were a lot of these early on. Some have had luck with the dealer covering it, especially if there are no noticeable dings, and if the crack has the common pattern for this issue. I would try and see what the dealer says, you might get lucky. Also, some insurance companies cover this, does yours?

Being aware of this I never blast the defroster on mine, which is unfortunate.

Its -45 degrees Celsius up here in Winnipeg today! I don't use the defrost setting on high when its that cold. Its a testament to the extreme face melting heat that rig puts out. I love it! We have public insurance up here and windshield replacement is dirt cheap. I have a $50 deductible.

My 08 cracked about 2 months after I bought it. Same symptoms as you described. Dealer did the ballpoint pen test. Then they replaced the windshield under warranty. The replacement looks to be much better quality than the stock windshield. Replacement was on the dealers lot by an independent windshield replacement company

Might be a better way to go. OK, I'm stupid. What's the ball-point pen test?

I didn't know either... found this:

A "pen test" is often used to determine if there is a stress crack -- a ballpoint pen is run along the crack, and if it dips anywhere, it is not a stress crack. That is because with a stress crack, no glass actually comes off the windshield.

CRAP... mine did the same thing this morning. I'll take it by the dealer and try my luck. It will be my first trip to the dealer for anything on the JK.
