Default Dana 44 HD?

So in configuring a 4dr JK Rubi, I see that if you add the tow package, it changes your Dana 44 rear for a Dana 44 HD (i assume that means heavy duty) I couldnt find any HD info on the Dana website. Anyone know if this is a real axle upgrade or if its just marketing jargon?

I am pretty sure the 44HD is a 32 spline axles instead of the normal 30... Someone may correct me on that one, but I am pretty sure it's the truth...

Hope I'm Right

They are the same axle. The 32 spline count is on the front outer shafts.

Yes, they are the same axles. I would think the difference is described here in this information from the factory service manual on axle fluids:

AXLE LUBRICATION

NOTE: DiamlerChrysler recommends using Mopar® lubricants or lubricants of equal quality.

FRONT AXLE
186 FBI (Model 30) - Mopar® Gear Lubricant 80W-90
216 FBI (Model 44) - Mopar® Gear Lubricant 80W-90

REAR AXLE
198 RBI (Model 35) - Mopar® Gear Lubricant 80W-90 (Trailer Towing Mopar® Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-140)
226 RBI (Model 44) - Mopar® Gear Lubricant 80W-90 (Trailer Towing Mopar® Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-140)

NOTE: Trac-lok® equipped axles require 0.1 L (3.4 ounces) of Limited Slip Additive in the lubricant.

If you order the trailer towing group I believe you get synthetic gear lubricant in the rear axle.

I think i figured it out. Since this tow option is available on the 2dr sahara model, which comes stock with the Dana 35 rear axle, it is listed as an upgrade to a Dana 44 HD. Basically, they didnt re-word it for the vehicles that already came with the 44 in the back, so it just seemed confusing.

That being said you're really just getting the hitch and wiring, along with synthetic for the $220. I guess thats not too terrible

You can buy a nice class 3 hitch through Quadratec for $99.00, and wire it up yourself with out too much problem. (the stock mopar hitch is a class 2) So really your paying about a hundred bucks for the synthetic gear lube.
Do you still think it's worth it?

PS: I believe there's threads in the JK-Write-ups area about hooking up the towing wireing harness if you want to give it a shot.

EDIT:for what it's worth.... I must admit that I don't have a clue as to how many quarts of lube the rear end holds. You'll probably want to look into this also before you make your final decision

Do you know how much lube is required in the Dana 44? I have to switch over to tow.

I was under the impression that the Rubi 44 was 32 spline and the front was 32 inner and outer. The X front are 32 spline outer and 27 inner. I'll try to find where I read this.

Found this:

I have seen the same on numerous other boards.
