Default deathwobble = scary wobble

ok, so last night i was driving home from work, going about 75. hit a "lump" in the road. (here in alabama, they dont really fix the highways, they just poor a bunch of asphalt in the hole and leave. freaking awesome) anyway, jeep starting to shake all over the place like i had a flat tire or somthing. i had to slow down to about 50 or so and it stopped and hasnt happend since.

i have a 2 door x with no mods on it. i am planning to get a 3.25" lift and 35s here in the next couple of weeks but i am thinking i need to diagnose this wobble before i do any work on my jeep..

since it is stock where should i begin to look? trac bar? it only has 18,000 miles on it.

thanks alot

if in fact you really had death wobble, all i can say is that it's not impossible or even uncommon for factory components to come loose. heck, i have even seen some brand new jk's with loose components. having said that, re-tighten your track bar bolts to 125 ft. lbs. as there's a good chance that one or both are loose.

If you've had death wobble, you know it. It violently shakes everything. It not a shimmy. And in my case, I had to slow down to under 30 to get it to stop.

Death wobble is when your jeep has a grand-mal seizure going down the highway. I still haven't resolved mine yet. I was thinking about just starting the video recorder while I drive so that I could catch it on video but I'm afraid to damage my digital recorder.

Hasn't death wobble been solved? This is what I have in my notes as the source of DW (I keep notes on certain things discussed on this board in case I need it for the future).

Someone posted this a few months ago:
"The track bar mounts on the JK are very weak and un-reinforced drop bracket will cause factory mount to break. Track bars place a tremendous amount of force on their mounts and this drop bracket acted as a lever working the mount back and forth until fatigue eventually broke it. Once broken, there would be nothing to keep the axle in place."

But it's not always the trackbar bracket. It could be anything from tie rod ends, to a bad wheel bearing, to a bad out of round rotor, or any combination of other things.

it possible the trac bar drop brackets could break but my jeep is stock... so no lift, so no drop brackets. it hasnt done it again though since the initial incident. is that weird?

Does your steering wheel shudder slightly when hitting bumps, like a wheel might be out of balance ? That is what mine has been doing just before the death wobble started.
