Sounds like quite a chore. I guess I should do it since squeaks and stuff drive me crazy. And those price quotes for that are scary

It was quite a chore when I did mine. I couldn't have done it by myself.

Once done, annual cleaning/lube will be a 20 minute, one person job.

did these in the spring and they are great,...no grease required and the doors come on/off with ease. Best of all they are delrin so no corrosion to worry about!

I could have sworn my bushings were metal with a plastic coating that pealed off long ago.

Is this a solution to remove the matal bushing and replace it with a plastic one to help save paint and grease?

Mine were plastic only, no metal bushing. The replacements posted above are delrin, better than plastic as they need no lubrication.

Maybe i'm looking at the wrong thing but the only plastic i have seen was this think black coating on what looks like a metal insert.

I'm not arguing i'm just trying to figure out what the heck i have

Mine appeared to be metal, lined with deteriorated plastic.
