Default eBrake Question

Hello JKers! I have a manual '07 unlimited and have a eBrake question. I tow a 19' bow (loaded weight with trailer around 3900 lbs) and I am moving to a new place with a driveway with a 20* incline, no joke!

I have never had my eBrake not hold...once it is engaged. I say that because about 30-40% of the time that I pull my eBrake, the lever goes straight to the top without ANY resistence and the jeep will roll like there is no brake engaged. I had the dealer "fix" it once and it worked for 1 day. I am going to take it back again but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks!

Yes experienced same issue with my 08 unlimited. I got lucky I was hooking up my utility trailer and as I was going to hook the trailer up to the hitch I pulled the E-Brake and left it in Neutral and as soon as stepped out and let the brake go it rolled back and BAM I was lucky the trailer hitch hit my hitch on the jeep....no damage on the JK. I took it in for adjustment....They stated could not replicate but adjusted a little.

Then I was out wheeling with my kids. I stopped on a small incline to take a picture of the scenary and same thing it started to roll back as I left it in neutral and only had the e-brake applied. I was lucky the rear tire stopped on a large boulder. Took it back to the dealership they adjusted it again.

When I was on an incline parking it the ebrake did not hold. But Finally after the 3rd time they adjusted it again and the last month it has not been an issue. So I would consider taking your JK to the dealership for an Ebrake adjustment. .If you ever hook up your trailer I would ensure you engage both your ebrake and have the Jeepin gear with that incline before you step out of the vehicle just in case it wants to roll.

I had the same problem. Once with the Jeep in the driveway. I forgot something, and when I returned, I foudn the Jeep in the middle of our street. It was a few feet from my neighbors truck with a car coming down the street. Also my son was in the Jeep.

Second time was at Rausch Creek. We stopped on a decline to look at the trail. My buddy was leading in his Dodge truck. When he looked back, he saw my Jeep rolling towards us. It was stopped by his back driver's corner. The Jeep's passenger's side fender peeled right off. Again, my son was sitting in the Jeep playing his DS.

I took the Jeep to the dealership, and they could not find anything wrong. Luckily I found a stock fender set on eBay for 3/4s of what the dealership wanted for just the one fender assembly.

I wonder how many others are having this issue.

Wow...nuts...especially with your kid in the JK, glad your son was okay....that is a saftey issue for sure.

I know I was very lucky the second time with my kids if that rock was not there....only another 20m(60ft) and it was a 100ft drop off!!!.

We were at the top of the hill (there are no mountiains here on the east coast). If the truck was not there, or my nose was a foot over to the left, we would have been chasing the JK to the bottom.

I have had my dealership check the brake twice. They adjusted it and said it was OK. I had the JK out this morning and tried the brake going uphill with 5 clicks on the ebrake. Still rolls. Downhill was the same. Pull one ore click and it holds, but that is not that reassuring.

Another thread is saying similar. Hopefully with enough people going back to the dealerships on this, Chrysler will do either a TSB or a recall with better brakes.

That is for sure...especially for us 6 speed manual owners, just way to scary...I am nervous just leaving the e-brake and in neutral now..

In my 09 I really have to pull up on the ebrake for it to stick on inclines but it does. I always keep it in gear on the trail and shut off the engine when I get out to be safe, but I am seeing much better hold. Maybe they improved the brake or fixed the issue with the 09s?

I have a 07 2 Dr Rubicon, and I don't trust the parking brake. I ALWAYS put it in gear with the engine off. Is there a way I can adjust this?

After two instances, I'm turning the motor off and putting it in gear.

When I pull my ebrake, it goes about 5 clicks. I found that I put 1 or 2 more clicks, and it holds (still not going to trust it). I just feel that I am going to pull the ebrake handle right out of the Jeep doing that too much.

I drove an old 1970 Jeepster for years, the e-brake on it was shot. When I bought the JK the e-brake was one of my favorite features! Trying to trail ride without an e-brake is such a pain! Any time you want to step out of the Jeep to check the trail, you've got to shut the jeep down and leave it in gear. Those days are over for me. My e-brake works great!
I'm not saying that to rub it in if yours isn't working, I'm saying it because we should all DEMAND that things work properly with our NEW JK's. I couldn't complain when my 40 year old e-brake wore out on the Jeepster, but I expect things to work when they are new.
I'd ask the service manager to show you how the e-brake is adjusted. That way you can see for your self if it's adjusted all the way. If that's not working, it may be an issue with the caliper.
