Engine issues and oil type?
I keep reading how some of the engines are going at or around 40k. How about we do a little survey?
If you have had an engine issue, list your oil weight and if it was dino or synthetic.
We might just find something out?

There are already a bunch of threads pertaining to this issue. Alot of these jeeps where the engines have major failures were bought used, who's to say the previous owner didnt do something stupid to the engine or not change the oil for 10 000 miles or something wild like that. It doesnt take much to mess an engine up if you dont perform regular maintenance or look after it. I think some people who didnt know what they were buying when they bought a JK were pissed over the lack of power and just beat this piss out of and neglected them until they knew something was going wrong or was going to go wrong with the engine, then sold it. Some owners that bought new have had issues but they are far and few in between. Every vehicle has a few lemons come off of the assembly line for a variety of different reasons. QA, QC can only do so much and will sometimes let a defective product slip out on to the assembly line, my JK got delivered with the wiring harness pinched in 2 different areas and 2 faulty ABS sensors.
In no way am I blaming jeep nor chrysler. I had a similar issue with a new 08 Mazda 3, even went to court because Mazda refused to accept responsibilty on a car with 14k miles. After a long battle, I won and they paid for it. Same issue as we are seeing here, number 1 bearing spun. In my research into the Mazda's, I found this was a much more common issue that at first noticed. Somehow the engines were starving of oil, yet they had plenty oil in them.
Yes I agree, you buy a used car and not have it inspected, you are just asking for trouble.
The original post was out of curiousity and knowledge.

Had I not gone thru the hell of an engine that ate itself I'd also be saying it was few and far between...I guess I'm somewhere between few and far between. I bought it new, didn't beat the hell out of it, and changed the oil like a fanatic. When the dealer opened the bottom of the engine to let the warranty inspector verify that I hadn't neglected it, it was pristine (save the presence of metal shards from the spun bearing). It certainly doesn't sound like I'm the only one.
You definitley arent the only one and yeah i'd say you fall somewhere between far and few (sorry to hear about the issues with your JK) but again out of the 400 000+? JK's that have been sold since their initial offering i'm willing to bet maybe a handful of owners, say 0.2% or 0.3% have had engine issues. Around 1000-1200 out of 400 000+ JK's isnt bad, of course it is when your Jeep is included in that number but by todays standards those numbers for malfunctions/failures even ones directly affecting the engine are normal. I do agree tho, it is pretty pathetic when a little V6 piss pot engine dies at 40000 miles, QA/QC has apparently been greatly improved at Chrysler since Fiat stepped in, I wont hold my breath tho.
Adam, you're completely right, it's a matter of perspective and from a quantitative standpoint, those are pretty good percentages. My point was the intimation by some of the people posting that it was more likely due to inattention on the part of the owner. While that may be the case (or not be the case) with others, it wasn't with me. From the sounds of it, likely not with others as well as they seem to mirror the symptoms exactly.
Out of all the "issues" I've read posted here and, knock on wood, have not experienced with my Jeep, I thought it appropriate on a big issue like this to post my experience, if nothing else to help others.
Bottom line, I love my Jeep and am just happy to have it back on the road again!!!
