Default Esp off???

I don't usually drive my JK in the snow, but it snowed 8" while I was at work Friday. Before I pulled out of the mine, I pulled it into 4Hi and headed for home. I turned my ESP off, but it still works just as if it was still on. Is this normal? Is there a way to disconnect it? Jeep should only offer this as an option, I personally hate it.

Just a quick note...did you hold down the ESP button for 10 seconds, until the ESPOFF message was displayed?
If you only just press the ESP button, it apparently only partially disables ESP.

If you had already held it til the ESPOFF message displayed and it was still acting like it was on, I have no earthly clue what the issue could be.

Edit:
Yamaha90's got a good point. I'd like to add that during normal driving I had ESP on, with no issues, it was actually kind of nice! The only time I fully disabled ESP was when getting unstuck.

By pushing the button, it will let you slide and slip more, but it won't let you get sideways playing in the snow. A pain sometimes but it saves lives.
